ABOUT THE ROLE
To continue advancing the impact we have across the communities we serve, Commonpoint is hiring a Senior Camp Counselor situated within the Camp Department. The Camp Department plays a vital role in creating engaging, safe, and enriching summer experiences for youth through structured programming, social-emotional development, and community-building activities. The individual hired as Senior Counselor will lead daily group activities, support camper engagement and behavior management, and serve as a role model for both
campers and junior staff. This role also includes assisting with program implementation, ensuring a safe and inclusive environment, and helping to maintain smooth day-to-day camp operations. This role reports directly to the Unit Head. Across the agency, our seasonal and part-time staff play a crucial role in driving our initiatives forward by supporting daily operations, program delivery, and organizational goals.

ROLE RESPONSIBILITIES
Agency Expectations
Support agency initiatives by carrying out assigned duties accurately and efficiently, while following established processes and contributing to basic data collection, reporting, or documentation as required.
Use agency resources responsibly by following established procedures, safeguarding equipment and materials, and/or supporting cost-effective operations.
Work effectively with supervisors, coworkers, and cross-department teams to ensure clear communication, timely task completion, and a positive, respectful work environment.
Follow all safety protocols, policies, and procedures to maintain a safe work environment for staff, partners, and the public, and promptly report concerns or incidents.
Role Expectations
Lead and actively engage a group of campers throughout the day, ensuring their safety, well-being, and participation in all activities.
Plan and facilitate age-appropriate, structured, and inclusive activities in alignment with camp programming.
Model positive behavior, leadership, and professionalism for both campers and junior staff.

Support behavior management using camp policies and promote a respectful, inclusive environment
Supervise and mentor junior counselors, providing guidance and support as needed.
Maintain accurate daily attendance and headcounts, ensuring all campers are accounted for at all times
Ensure proper staff-to-camper ratios are consistently met and maintained
Prepare campers for all scheduled activities, including daily swim, ensuring appropriate supervision and readiness
Assist with daily camp operations including transitions, attendance, lunch, swim, and trips
Maintain strong communication with supervisors regarding camper needs, incidents, and overall group dynamics
Ensure all safety protocols and emergency procedures are followed at all times
Actively participate in staff meetings, trainings, and professional development opportunities
Contribute to a positive team culture and collaborate effectively with fellow staff members
Must be prepared to swim, daily.

QUALIFICATIONS & KEY ATTRIBUTES:
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Must be at least 18 years old
Prior experience working with children in a camp, school, or youth program setting required
Demonstrated leadership skills and ability to supervise and guide a group of children
Strong communication and interpersonal skills
Ability to manage behavior effectively in a group setting
Dependable, punctual, and able to work collaboratively as part of a team
Ability to maintain a high level of energy and engagement throughout the camp day
Comfortable participating in all camp activities, including outdoor play and daily swim
Ability to maintain accurate attendance, follow schedules, and ensure camper safety at all times
Must pass background check and complete all required onboarding and compliance trainings (including medical clearance, if applicable)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
Previous experience in a Commonpoint role is a plus.
Previous experience in a leadership role within a camp or youth program (e.g., Senior Counselor, Group Leader, or Unit Leader)
Experience supervising or mentoring junior staff or volunteers
Background in education, psychology, recreation, or a related field
CPR/First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain prior to the start of camp)
Experience supporting children with diverse learning, behavioral, or social-emotional needs
Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple responsibilities in a fast-paced environment
Experience leading structured activities such as sports, arts & crafts, STEM, or group games
Ability to take initiative, problem-solve, and adapt quickly to changing situations
Familiarity with safety procedures, behavior management strategies, and youth development best practices

COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:
Commonpoint offers competitive base salaries benchmarked against comparable nonprofit organizations in the New York metropolitan area. Salaries are determined based on internal and external equity, as well as each position's scope, qualifications, and organizational impact. We believe in compensating staff fairly and consistently, ensuring that all salary decisions align with our mission-driven commitment to equity and transparency. To maintain fairness across the organization, salary offers are set according to established salary bands and are
not subject to negotiation. New hires typically start near the beginning of the salary range to allow for growth based on performance, professional development, and tenure.
Seasonal Salary/Rate: $2,200 - $2,950 | Starting Salary: $2,200
