Job description

We are seeking a Commodity Purchaser – Prairies & Treated Programs to support our Prairie operations by sourcing lumber, panel, and treated wood products strategically and cost-effectively. This role is responsible for ensuring product availability, managing inventory and purchasing decisions across multiple branches, maintaining supplier relationships, and supporting procurement strategies that drive operational efficiency and profitable growth.

Location & Work Model

  • Calgary, AB preferred (Remote considered)
  • Work Model: Onsite / Hybrid
  • Travel: Regular travel to Prairie branches, supplier and mill visits, and attendance at purchasing meetings and offsite events in Calgary

Responsibilities

  • Manage treated lumber programs, including supplier negotiations, inventory planning, replenishment, and vendor performance.
  • Run and validate suggested-order batches for Manitoba and Saskatchewan branches, ensuring accurate purchasing decisions and inventory replenishment.
  • Create and release purchase orders while balancing immediate branch requirements with truckload and freight efficiencies.
  • Build and manage forward positions on dimensional lumber, panels, and treated products, including block-buy commitments and allocation planning.
  • Monitor commodity markets, pricing trends, futures, and industry reports to support buy/hold/cover decisions.
  • Maintain accurate replacement costs and provide market intelligence to support pricing strategies and planning activities.
  • Negotiate pricing, freight, supply programs, and volume commitments with mills, distributors, and treating partners.
  • Reconcile supplier confirmations against purchase orders and resolve shortages, substitutions, claims, and delivery issues.
  • Monitor inventory performance, stock turns, aged inventory, and below-cost SKUs while supporting corrective actions where required.
  • Coordinate purchasing activities across multiple banners and branches to maximize buying power, supplier programs, and rebate opportunities.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives, process enhancements, and digital purchasing workflows.

Experience & Qualifications

  • 3–5+ years of purchasing or trading commodity wood products in a Canadian LBM, wholesale, distribution, or mill-direct environment.
  • Strong knowledge of SPF lumber, studs, OSB, plywood, treated lumber, and commodity market pricing.
  • Experience with supplier management, purchasing, inventory replenishment, and ERP systems.
  • Strong analytical skills, including cost, freight, margin, and inventory analysis.
  • Proven success negotiating pricing, volume agreements, and supplier programs.
  • Experience managing treated lumber programs and building strong supplier relationships.
  • Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to work independently while collaborating across teams.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with BisTrack purchasing and inventory systems.
  • Knowledge of vendor rebate programs, truckload/railcar procurement, and AI-assisted purchasing tools.
