Job description

THE COMPANY:

At Schnabel, we combine technical expertise with a hands-on approach to ensure every project starts on solid ground.

ROLE:

Schnabel is seeking a Controller to work in our Corporate office in Sterling, VA. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the Controller is responsible for the day-to-day leadership of the accounting and financial reporting function for a nationwide specialty geotechnical construction contractor. This position ensures timely and accurate financial reporting, strong internal controls, compliance with GAAP, tax and regulatory requirements, and provides leadership to the accounting team while partnering closely with operations, project management, payroll, equipment and executive leadership.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Lead monthly, quarterly and annual financial close and reporting processes.
  • Manage the general ledger, account reconciliations and financial statement preparation in accordance with U.S. GAAP.
  • Supervise and develop accounting staff while promoting continuous improvement.
  • Maintain and enhance internal controls and accounting policies.
  • Support annual external audit, tax preparation and lender reporting.
  • Oversee accounting for construction contracts, WIP schedules, job cost, equipment accounting, payroll allocations and intercompany transactions.
  • Partner with operations to improve project financial reporting and profitability analysis.
  • Assist with cash flow forecasting, budgeting and financial planning.
  • Drive process improvements using Sage 300 CRE, Microsoft Excel and reporting tools.
  • Support implementation of accounting best practices and automation initiatives.
  • Assist the CFO with special projects, strategic initiatives and executive reporting.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting with 8 years of experience.
  • Active CPA license required.
  • 5+ years of progressive accounting experience with at least 5 years in commercial construction.
  • Experience as an Assistant Controller, Controller or Senior Accounting Manager at a construction contractor with approximately $100M–$200M in annual revenue.
  • Hands-on experience with Sage 300 Construction & Real Estate (CRE).
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills (pivot tables, Power Query, complex formulas; Power Pivot a plus).
  • Strong understanding of percentage-of-completion accounting, job cost accounting, WIP schedules and construction financial statements.
  • Experience managing audits and coordinating with external auditors and tax advisors.
  • Excellent leadership, communication and organizational skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience working for a multi-state construction contractor.
  • Experience preparing payroll tax and state sales and use tax filings.
  • Knowledge of Sage 300 Construction and Real Estate accounting software.
  • Familiarity with payroll tax, sales and use tax, business licensing and contractor licensing requirements.
  • Experience reconciling bank accounts and general ledger accounts.
