Job description

JOB ANNOUNCEMENT

Position Title: Paralegal                                   Location: Los Angeles, partially remote

Position Type: Full-time, non -exempt       Application Deadline: Open until filled.

About GWC: Founded in 2001, the Garment Worker Center is a worker rights organization leading an anti-sweatshop movement to improve conditions for tens of thousands of Los Angeles garment workers. Through direct organizing, GWC develops leaders who demand enforcement of strong labor laws and accountability from factory owners, manufacturers, and fashion brands. We center immigrant workers, women of color, and their families who are impacted by exploitation in the fashion industry.

Position description:  GWC seeks a dedicated community-centered Paralegal for our growing Legal Clinic. The Paralegal is responsible for supporting Staff Attorneys in providing legal assistance and direct representation to garment workers.

Job Responsibilities

  • Assist Staff Attorneys with wage and damage calculations. 

  • Conduct defendant (employer & fashion brand research) and asset research.

  • Prepare templates for pleadings and other other case-related legal documents.

  • Organize case documents and evidence.

  • Translate documents from English to Spanish, and vice-versa, or coordinate with certified translators.

  • Support Staff Attorneys with submitting evidence and other required documentation to the CA Labor Commission in advance of settlement conferences and hearings.

  • Support Staff Attorneys with preparation of files for settlement conferences and hearings.

  • Attend clinics and conduct intake, as needed.

  • Support Staff Attorneys in attending settlement conferences and hearings, as needed.

Skills and Experience

  • Paralegal Certificate, B.A. and 1 year experience under the supervision of a licensed attorney, or a high school diploma and 3 years experience under the supervision of a licensed attorney.

  • Strong research, writing and analytical skills, with a strong preference for corporate research experience.

  • Proficient on Lexis Nexis or Westlaw.

  • Experience with trauma-informed interview skills (preferred but not required).

  • Strong commitment to racial, gender, and economic justice and their intersections.

  • Knowledge of the garment industry (preferred but not required).

  • Self-motivated, able to set priorities and goals, and also work well in collective settings.

  • Detail-oriented and able to meet deadlines.

  • Fluent in Spanish -  both written and oral skills.

  • Speaks Zapotec or Mayan dialect (preferred but not required).
