Job description

Position Summary

The CNC Machine Setup I is responsible for maintaining daily production on CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machines through efficient setups, tool changes, changeovers, and routine maintenance. This role ensures production quality, adherence to safety standards, and continuous workflow within a precision manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities
  • Follow all company safety standards, including proper use of PPE (safety glasses, protective footwear), safe lifting techniques, and chip handling procedures
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and efficient work area, including machines, tools, toolboxes, gages, and workstations
  • Accurately log setup and tool change times using data collection systems
  • Report cycle times and production rates to Supervisor or Manager
  • Perform tool changes, including drills, reamers, boring bars, and knurls (live and static tooling)
  • Conduct daily machine maintenance (e.g., boring jaws, fixture/vise alignment, collet and guide bushing cleaning)
  • Make minor program edits under supervision (tool offsets, speeds, and feeds as directed by Engineering)
  • Set up repeat production jobs efficiently and accurately
  • Complete 100% dimensional verification on first article inspections
  • Perform visual inspections to ensure part quality meets company standards (finish, fillets, blends, workmanship)
  • Complete all required documentation accurately (tool layouts, offset sheets, setup checklists, etc.)
  • Support and mentor less experienced machine operators
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Required Qualifications
  • 4–7 years of experience in a machine shop, including CNC setup and/or production machining
  • 4–7 years of experience using precision measuring instruments
  • Hands-on experience with multi-axis CNC lathes, Swiss-style CNC lathes, and vertical machining centers
Skills & Competencies
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced manufacturing environment
  • Strong communication and teamwork skills across all levels of the organization
  • Reliable attendance and strong work ethic
  • Ability to read and interpret complex blueprints and geometric tolerances (GD&T)
  • Knowledge of tool selection processes (tool crib, vending systems) and insert identification
  • Ability to read and follow setup documentation, including tool layout sheets and machine checklists
  • Experience performing machine changeovers within product families
  • Ability to analyze part drawings and support process development, tooling, and fixturing needs
  • Basic CNC programming knowledge using CAM software
  • Strong understanding of CNC controls and safety features (single block, optional stop, distance-to-go, etc.)
  • Knowledge of cutting tools, inserts, and live/static tool holders
Physical Requirements
  • Ability to lift and/or move materials per job requirements
  • Standing, walking, and performing repetitive tasks for extended periods
  • Manual dexterity for handling tools and precision instruments
