Job description

Job Title: CNC Operator / Machinist

Job Description

This role focuses on setting up and operating CNC lathes and milling machines to produce precision components for industrial pumping solutions in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. You will work primarily with CNC lathes, perform frequent machine changeovers, and use Fanuc controls, precision measuring tools, and detailed blueprints to ensure high-quality, accurate parts.

Responsibilities

  • Set up and operate CNC lathes as the primary focus, as well as CNC milling machines, to produce precision machined components.
  • Perform frequent machine changeovers and tool offsets, averaging 3 to 10 setup changes per shift.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, job travelers, and process documentation to determine machining requirements.
  • Utilize Fanuc controls to load, verify, adjust, and run CNC machining programs.
  • Inspect in-process and finished parts using precision measuring instruments such as micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, and other inspection tools.
  • Record and log dimensional measurements and quality data in accordance with company procedures and documentation standards.
  • Verify that machined parts meet customer specifications, tolerances, and internal quality standards.
  • Monitor machine performance during operation and make appropriate adjustments to maintain part quality and production efficiency.
  • Change tooling, replace inserts, and perform routine machine maintenance as required to keep equipment in optimal condition.
  • Maintain a clean, organized, and safe work area, following all shop safety practices and guidelines.
  • Collaborate closely with supervisors, programmers, and quality personnel to troubleshoot and resolve machining and quality issues.
  • Follow established machining processes while providing feedback for continuous improvement of setup efficiency and product quality.

Essential Skills

  • High school diploma or GED.
  • 2+ years of CNC machining experience preferred, ideally in a production environment.
  • Hands-on experience operating CNC lathes and CNC mills.
  • Experience with Okuma and/or Matsuura machining equipment preferred.
  • Working knowledge of Fanuc CNC controls, including loading and running programs.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, engineering drawings, and basic GD&T concepts.
  • Proficiency using precision measuring instruments, including micrometers and calipers.
  • Strong attention to detail with a clear commitment to producing high-quality work.
  • Ability to perform multiple setups and changeovers throughout a shift without sacrificing quality.
  • Basic mathematical skills and mechanical aptitude applicable to machining operations.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and stand for extended periods during the shift.
  • Comfort working in a fast-paced production environment with frequent setups and changeovers.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

  • Experience working in a machine shop environment with CNC machine setup and operation.
  • Familiarity with G-code programming concepts and milling operations.
  • Experience with tooling selection, offsets, and basic CNC programming adjustments.
  • Experience using inspection tools beyond micrometers and calipers, such as bore gauges.
  • Ability to follow documented processes and accurately complete production and quality records.
  • Strong communication skills to effectively collaborate with supervisors, programmers, and quality teams.
  • Demonstrated ability to maintain a clean, organized workstation and follow safety procedures.
  • Interest in professional development and training to advance into more technical or leadership roles.
