What are Commission Linux Kernel Developers?

Commission Linux Kernel Developers are software engineers who specialize in developing, maintaining, and optimizing the Linux kernel, typically on a contract or project basis. They work with hardware vendors, software companies, or open-source communities to add features, fix bugs, or enhance performance in the kernel. Their responsibilities may also include writing device drivers, contributing to upstream kernel projects, and ensuring compatibility with various hardware architectures. These developers need a deep understanding of operating systems, C programming, and the Linux kernel's internal workings.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Commission Linux Kernel Developer, and why are they important?

A Commission Linux Kernel Developer needs deep expertise in C programming, operating system concepts, and strong problem-solving abilities, often supported by a degree in computer science or related fields. Familiarity with Linux kernel development tools, version control systems like Git, and experience submitting patches to upstream kernel repositories are typically required. Outstanding analytical thinking, collaboration, and communication skills distinguish top performers in this highly specialized role. These skills are crucial for developing robust, secure kernel code and effectively contributing to open-source projects in fast-evolving technical environments.

What are some common challenges faced by Commission Linux Kernel Developers when working with hardware vendors?

Commission Linux Kernel Developers often collaborate closely with hardware vendors to ensure compatibility and performance of device drivers and kernel modules. A common challenge is dealing with incomplete or proprietary documentation, which can slow down development and troubleshooting. Developers also need to navigate differing priorities between open-source community standards and vendor-specific requirements. Building and maintaining effective communication with vendors and upstream contributors is key to resolving issues efficiently and ensuring long-term support for hardware integration.

In this role, you'll be the hands-on expert installing, programming, troubleshooting, and maintaining state-of-the-art security systems-from cloud-connected CCTV to access control platforms.
Whether you're solving on-site issues, programming integrated systems, or guiding clients through upgrades, your work will keep operations secure and relationships strong.
What You'll Do - Solve, Serve, and Secure
  • Diagnose and repair issues with CCTV systems, NVRs/DVRs, and access control hardware.
  • Resolve problems with electric strikes, mag locks, relays, readers, and door hardware.
  • Test and troubleshoot system configurations, wiring, and power supply integrity.
  • Minimize downtime by replacing faulty components and updating firmware efficiently.
  • Ensure full compliance with safety and operational protocols.
  • Configure access control and surveillance systems from Avigilon, Motorola, Paxton, and OpenPath.
  • Set user permissions, mobile credentials, and integrate cloud-based platforms.
  • Fine-tune video analytics, alerts, and access logic to meet site-specific requirements.
  • Integrate security systems with network infrastructure, wireless devices, and mobile interfaces.
  • Install and commission small to mid-sized security systems (IP cameras, NVRs, controllers, door hardware).
  • Connect and configure system components with accuracy and attention to client needs.
  • Conduct final testing, verification, and provide hands-on training for end users.
  • Collaborate with clients and internal teams to schedule and complete service visits or new installs.
  • Maintain accurate service documentation, drawings, and programming records.
  • Ensure full compliance with industry codes, safety standards (OSHA), and project specifications.
  • Act as the trusted point of contact for SMBE clients-delivering support with empathy, urgency, and professionalism.
  • Recommend system enhancements or upgrades based on evolving client needs.
  • Build relationships that last by delivering not just service-but peace of mind.

What You Bring
  • 5+ years of hands-on experience in security system installation, programming, and service.
  • Expertise in enterprise-grade access control, intrusion, CCTV, and intercom systems.
  • Active certifications or strong knowledge of Avigilon, Motorola, Paxton, or OpenPath preferred.
  • Strong background in electronics, troubleshooting, and low-voltage systems.
  • Knowledge of IT networking, Windows OS, Linux, Microsoft Office, and Bluebeam Studio.
  • Familiarity with diagnostic tools and ability to read complex construction and wiring documents.
  • Excellent communication, documentation, and client-facing skills.
  • Self-motivated, detail-oriented, and capable of managing multiple priorities independently.
  • High school/trade school graduate, military training, or Associate degree in a related technical field.
  • Must maintain Department of Criminal Justice registration and pass background, drug, and credit checks.

Why Join Us?
  • Make an Impact: Your work directly protects and empowers local businesses.
  • Flexibility & Ownership: Operate independently while still being supported by a collaborative team.
