What is a commission full stack developer?

A Commission Full Stack Developer is a software engineer who works on both the front-end and back-end aspects of web or application development, and is compensated primarily through commissions or performance-based payments rather than a fixed salary. They may work as freelancers or contractors, often earning a percentage of sales, project milestones, or successful deployments. This role requires proficiency in multiple programming languages, frameworks, and the ability to manage entire projects from concept to completion. Commission-based arrangements can offer flexible work and higher earning potential, but may also involve variable income and less job stability. Clients hire Commission Full Stack Developers for their technical versatility and results-driven approach.

How does compensation on a commission basis affect the workflow and priorities of a full stack developer?

Working as a Commission Full Stack Developer typically means your earnings are tied directly to project completion or specific deliverables, rather than a fixed salary. This compensation structure encourages you to be highly efficient, prioritize projects with the greatest impact, and collaborate closely with clients or sales teams to understand their needs and timelines. While this can offer greater earning potential and flexibility, it also requires strong time management and self-motivation to consistently secure and deliver on new projects. You may need to balance multiple clients simultaneously and proactively communicate progress to ensure satisfaction and repeat business.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a commission full stack developer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Commission Full Stack Developer, you need proficiency in both front-end and back-end programming languages (such as JavaScript, HTML/CSS, Python, or Java) and a solid understanding of web application architecture. Familiarity with frameworks (like React, Node.js, or Django), version control systems (e.g., Git), and cloud platforms is often required, along with a relevant degree or coding bootcamp experience. Strong problem-solving skills, effective time management, and clear client communication are essential soft skills in a commission-based, project-driven environment. These skills ensure you can deliver high-quality, full-cycle software solutions while meeting client expectations and deadlines.

Is full-stack developer still in demand?

Full-stack developers remain in high demand due to their ability to handle both front-end and back-end development, with skills in frameworks like React, Angular, and Node.js. The role is essential in many industries, and demand is expected to grow as companies prioritize versatile developers capable of working across the entire technology stack.

Which company pays the highest salary for a commission full stack developer?

The highest salaries for commission-based full stack developers are typically found at large technology companies and startups that offer competitive compensation packages, often including base pay plus performance-based commissions. Salaries can vary widely depending on experience, location, and the company's size, with top-paying roles often exceeding $150,000 annually when commissions are included. Companies in the tech industry with a focus on software development and digital services tend to offer the highest total compensation for this role.

Job description

Team Lead, Software Engineering - Full-Stack
Job Description
Overview:
CoStar Group (NASDAQ: CSGP) is a leading global provider of commercial and residential real estate information, analytics, and online marketplaces. Included in the S&P 500 Index, CoStar Group is on a mission to digitize the world's real estate, empowering all people to discover properties, insights and connections that improve their businesses and lives.
We have been living and breathing the world of real estate information and online marketplaces for over 35 years, giving us the perspective to create truly unique and valuable offerings to our customers. We've continually refined, transformed and perfected our approach to our business, creating a language that has become standard in our industry, for our customers, and even our competitors. We continue that effort today and are always working to improve and drive innovation. This is how we deliver for our customers, our employees, and investors. By equipping the brightest minds with the best resources available, we provide an invaluable edge in real estate.
Role Description:
We are seeking a Technical Team Lead to lead the team that builds and maintains our portfolio of financial web applications in the finance tech organization. These applications give our internal sales, finance and customer service teams a clear, trustworthy view of a customer's financial relationship with CoStar - what they subscribe to, what they have been billed, and where their account stands - along with the tools to act on it, from servicing subscription changes to resolving billing issues and responding to customer requests.
These systems sit directly in the path of CoStar's revenue operations and are subject to audit and SOX controls, so correctness, traceability and reliability matter as much as speed of delivery.
This is a hands-on leadership role. You will manage and grow the team, own its deliverables and its coordination with partner teams, and stay directly involved in design and implementation. You will set the bar for engineering practices through your own work as much as through review and mentorship, and you will be accountable for the reliability of what the team runs in production.
This position is in Richmond, VA and has a work schedule of Monday through Thursday in-office and Friday work from home.
Responsibilities:
  • Lead and grow a team of full stack engineers, including hiring, coaching, performance management and career development
  • Own the team's deliverables end to end, from scope and technical direction through quality and on-time delivery
  • Plan and coordinate with other engineering teams, product management and business stakeholders across finance, sales and customer service, setting realistic commitments and communicating progress, risks and tradeoffs
  • Own the architecture of the team's systems across the full stack, balancing micro-frontend web application design with the backend-for-frontend layer, REST APIs and the relational data layer they depend on
  • Stay hands-on, contributing directly to design and implementation across the stack, and participating in design and code reviews
  • Translate business, audit and regulatory requirements into well-scoped, testable engineering work, and keep stakeholders honest about tradeoffs
  • Be accountable for production support of the team's systems, including monitoring, alerting, incident response and reliability
  • Hold a high bar for engineering practices and standards across testing, code quality, CI/CD, documentation, observability and security

Basic Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree required from an accredited, not-for-profit, in-person college/university
  • Track record of commitment to prior employers
  • 5+ years' experience building web applications and the services and databases behind them, including 3+ years building large distributed, API-driven systems
  • Demonstrated experience owning delivery for a team, including planning, prioritization, and coordination with product management and business stakeholders, and excellent written and verbal communication with technical and non-technical audiences
  • Hands-on proficiency building production React applications, together with server-side development in Node.js and C# / .NET
  • Advanced SQL Server and T-SQL skills, including stored procedure development and query performance tuning, along with the data quality, validation and reconciliation controls that financial data requires
  • Experience designing complete applications rather than individual features - API contract design, versioning and backward compatibility, clear separation of concerns and consistent use of established design patterns
  • Track record of accountability for production systems, including on-call ownership, incident response and driving down operational burden, supported by version control and CI/CD in a major cloud environment (Azure, AWS or GCP)
  • Experience with agentic engineering and AI-assisted development tools (e.g., Claude Code, GitHub Copilot) to accelerate software delivery

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience with micro-frontend architecture and independently deployable frontend applications (Web Components / HTML custom elements, module federation, or equivalent), and with maintaining a shared component library and consistent design standards across them
  • Payments, billing or subscription management systems experience, or experience with applications subject to audit and SOX controls
  • Experience integrating with third-party billing, payments or collections platforms
  • Familiarity with event-driven and message-based integration (Kafka, RabbitMQ, SQS, Azure Service Bus), caching with Redis, search with Elastic or OpenSearch, and Azure or AWS services including Functions, S3, Lambda and Step Functions
  • Observability and monitoring tooling such as Datadog, Kibana or Application Insights
  • Demonstrated use of AI-assisted development practices (Claude Code or similar) to accelerate delivery, code generation and review along with root-cause analysis

What's in it for you?
When you join CoStar Group, you'll experience a collaborative and innovative culture working alongside the best and brightest to empower our people and customers to succeed.
We offer you generous compensation and performance-based incentives. CoStar Group also invests in your professional and academic growth with internal training and tuition reimbursement.
Our benefits package includes (but is not limited to):
  • Comprehensive healthcare coverage: Medical / Vision / Dental / Prescription Drug
  • Life, legal, and supplementary insurance
  • Virtual and in-person mental health counseling services for individuals and family
  • Commuter and parking benefits
  • 401(k) retirement plan with matching contributions
  • Employee stock purchase plan
  • Paid time off
  • Tuition reimbursement
  • On-site fitness center and/or reimbursed fitness center membership costs (location dependent), with yoga studio, Pelotons, personal training, group exercise classes
  • Access to CoStar Group's Employee Resource Groups
  • Complimentary gourmet coffee, tea, hot chocolate, fresh fruit, and other healthy snacks

The final salary or hourly rate offered for this role will fall within the range set forth below based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to, geographic location, skills, and competencies.
Base Compensation: $155,000 - $203,000 Annually
We welcome all qualified candidates who are currently eligible to work full-time in the United States to apply. However, please note that CoStar Group is not able to provide visa sponsorship for this position.
