Our new Neighborhood Development Associate will be a candidate who can translate complex community development, land use, and planning concepts into engaging, easy-to-understand information for high school students while providing staff support to the Hampton Youth Commission. Successful applicants will also demonstrate the ability to build community-centered partnerships, connect residents with neighborhood resources, and support initiatives including volunteer engagement, strategic planning, neighborhood registration, housing programs, community engagement, grant management, and other neighborhood development efforts.
Minimum Requirements
  • Requires college coursework in Planning, Urban Studies, Communication, Public Relations, Public Administration, Political Science, or related field of study. Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Minimum of one (1) year of work experience in community engagement, non-profit development, or closely related experience.
  • A combination of education, professional certifications, and equivalent experience may be considered for this position.
  • Experience should involve working with diverse groups of people including minority populations, youth, and seniors.
  • Must successfully pass a background check related to the position prior to any offer of employment or promotion.
  • Must possess a driver's license and must have and maintain a satisfactory driving record based on the City of Hampton's criteria.
Additional Requirements
  • Requires effective communication with internal and external customers.
  • Requires working non-standard hours including evenings and weekends
  • Requires considerable local travel. Some regional or state travel required.
  • Dependent on performance, rotation of remote work is permitted.
  • The incumbent may be considered "essential personnel" during City emergencies or at the direction of the City Manager, which may include long hours and unusual schedules.
