Job description

Audio Visual Design Engineer

Location: Conroe, TX — On-site with regional travel to project sites

Job Type: Full-time, Exempt

Compensation: $70,000–$100,000 annually, DOE

Department: Low-Voltage / Systems Design

Reports To: Chief Solutions Officer

About the Role

Verum AV Solutions is looking for an AV Design Engineer with a strong primary focus in audio system design to join our growing team.

Our projects serve houses of worship, restaurants and hospitality spaces, event centers, corporate environments, educational facilities, and municipal projects. We are looking for someone who can take a project from early concept through construction documents, installation, commissioning, and final performance verification.

This role is ideal for an engineer who understands that great AV design is more than selecting equipment. You should be able to analyze a room, model system performance, make sound technical decisions, create a buildable design package, and stand behind your work in the field.

You will report directly to our Chief Solutions Officer and work closely with our Installs Manager, creating a strong connection between what is designed and what is ultimately built.

What You'll Own

Audio System Design — Primary Focus

  • Design speech- and music-reinforcement systems for acoustically challenging spaces, including high-reverberation sanctuaries, event halls, and multi-zone hospitality environments.
  • Model coverage and predicted intelligibility using EASE, EASE Focus, or manufacturer prediction tools such as Meyer Sound MAPP 3D, d&b ArrayCalc, L-Acoustics Soundvision, and Bose Modeler.
  • Select and aim point-source, column array, line array, distributed ceiling, and subwoofer systems.
  • Design to measurable performance targets, including coverage uniformity, dynamic range, and predicted STI/STIPA.
  • Design DSP architecture and signal flow using platforms such as Q-SYS, Biamp Tesira, Symetrix, and BSS.
  • Specify FOH, monitor, and broadcast mixing systems, stage I/O, snakes, patch systems, and mix-position layouts.
  • Design wireless microphone and IEM systems, including frequency coordination, antenna distribution, and spectrum planning.
  • Design 70V/100V distributed audio, background music, and paging systems.
  • Design assistive listening systems in accordance with applicable ADA requirements and hearing-loop standards.
  • Coordinate with acousticians and recommend acoustic treatment when appropriate rather than simply over-specifying loudspeakers.

Video, Control & Networked AV

  • Design display, projection, dLED, IMAG, confidence monitor, and lobby/overflow systems.
  • Design intuitive control systems and user interfaces using platforms such as Q-SYS and Crestron.
  • Design AV-over-IP and networked audio systems using Dante, AES67, NDI, SDVoE, and HDBaseT.
  • Apply appropriate VLAN segmentation, QoS, multicast, and PTP practices.
  • Design live-streaming and recording signal paths, including broadcast audio and video workflows.

Low-Voltage & Infrastructure Design

  • Produce Division 27 communications and supporting Division 26 electrical construction documents.
  • Create cable schedules, riser diagrams, rack elevations, one-line signal flows, and device/plate layouts.
  • Design structured cabling systems including Cat6A, fiber, coax, and SDI.
  • Support IP camera and access control design, including camera placement, FOV analysis, NVR/storage sizing, and bandwidth planning.
  • Design in accordance with applicable NEC, TIA, AVIXA, ADA, firestop, and plenum requirements.
  • Develop field-buildable rack designs following applicable AVIXA standards.

Documentation, Coordination & Field Support

  • Produce complete professional design packages.
  • Coordinate with architects, electrical engineers, general contractors, and church building committees.
  • Create accurate BOMs for direct import into Jetbuilt and provide reliable labor estimates.
  • Work with preferred distribution and manufacturer partners while considering lead times and availability.
  • Review shop drawings and submittals for design-intent and code compliance.
  • Partner with the installation team on RFIs, field changes, and as-builts.
  • Conduct a pre-install handoff for each project so the field team understands the design intent.
  • Track design tasks through Monday.com.
  • Commission systems through tuning, EQ/delay alignment, and performance verification.

Our Primary Project Verticals

Houses of Worship — Primary

Reverberant spaces, speech intelligibility, full-band worship, volunteer operators, streaming, and phased budgets.

Restaurants, Bars & Hospitality — Significant

Multi-zone music and paging, high ambient noise, aesthetics, and 70V distribution.

Event Centers & Multipurpose Venues — Significant

Multiple room configurations, portable and hybrid systems, fast changeovers, and production coordination.

Corporate, Education & Municipal — Ongoing

Division 26/27 documentation, AHJ and ADA compliance, conferencing, UC integration, security, and access control.

We may design-build a church project one day and produce a Division 27 bid package for a municipal facility the next. You should be comfortable working across both environments.

Required Qualifications

  • 3+ years of commercial AV system design experience with demonstrable depth in audio system design.
  • Experience with coverage modeling, gain structure, loudspeaker/amplifier matching, and intelligibility prediction.
  • A portfolio of completed audio designs, including at least one acoustically challenging worship or assembly space.
  • Strong understanding of AV signal flow, gain structure, impedance, and power calculations.
  • Working knowledge of Division 26 and Division 27 documentation and specifications.
  • Experience designing structured cabling systems including Cat6A, fiber, and coax/SDI.
  • Solid networking fundamentals including VLANs, QoS, multicast, IGMP, and PTP as applied to AV.
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD, Revit, and/or Bluebeam.
  • Ability to read and mark up architectural, structural, and electrical drawings.
  • Working familiarity with IP camera and access control design.
  • Strong written communication skills for specifications, RFIs, and submittal reviews.
  • Comfort designing to ADA, life-safety, and local AHJ requirements.
  • Willingness to travel regionally for project walkthroughs and commissioning.

Preferred Qualifications

Certifications and training that stand out include:

  • Q-SYS Control certification or equivalent
  • Q-SYS Level One / Level Two
  • AVIXA CTS-D
  • Audinate Dante Certification — Level 2 or 3
  • BICSI RCDD
  • Manufacturer training in Biamp Tesira, Crestron, Shure, or a major loudspeaker platform

We also value:

  • Direct house-of-worship design experience
  • Hands-on system tuning and measurement using Smaart, SysTune, REW, TEF, or equivalent
  • Real STIPA measurement experience
  • Live sound mixing experience, particularly worship or corporate/theatrical production
  • Acoustic modeling experience with EASE or manufacturer platforms
  • Field and installation experience, including cable pulling and rack termination
  • Familiarity with Jetbuilt, Monday.com, and Google Workspace
  • Experience with distributed or multi-site campus AV and streaming systems
