Position Summary
Responsible for the buying/selling of natural gas supply for the regulated assets of Xcel Energy. Execute multi-million-dollar transactions in the natural gas commodity market, including use of financial derivatives and physical supply agreements. Acquire adequate quantities of reliable gas supplies at competitive prices, consistent with purchase plans and transportation agreements on daily basis to ensure service is not interrupted to gas and electric customers.
Essential Responsibilities

  • With limited oversight, develop and execute daily, annual, and long-range gas supply plans for the regulated operating companies within XE. Independently negotiate (often in a matter of minutes) gas purchase agreements with producers, energy brokers, and marketers to satisfy XE's $2B/yr. gas supply requirements. Participate in modeling and developing supply plans. Perform analysis in real-time to ensure reliable gas and electric service.

  • Collaborate with Gas Schedulers to ensure an adequate supply of gas is delivered to satisfy the daily and hourly requirements in the most economical fashion.

  • Continuously monitor and participate in the financial trading markets. Develop and revise purchasing plans or trading strategies (often in a matter of minutes). Optimize transportation and storage assets through arbitrage. Negotiate financial transactions, including derivatives, for short term and long-term hedging natural gas price exposure for both retail gas and electric customers.

  • Produce regulatory testimony for state commission proceedings, including fuel reconciliation proceedings, rate cases, and new regulatory requirements. Provide testimony in Commission proceedings. Create numerical models and develop comments through gathering supportive facts to respond to information requests during regulatory litigation.

  • Develop and negotiate gas supply sales agreements associated with electric trading transactions. Develop and implement gas supply trading strategies to maximize profitability and minimize fuel cost.

  • Contribute to the development of regulatory and XE policy on gas procurement and recovery of related costs. Participate in the development and implementation of new policy initiatives, such as XE's low emission gas goals.

  • Monitor and track the accounting operations and contract administration functions for purchased gas supply. Maintain accurate documentation of commodity transactions for regulatory agencies. Develop and maintain communications with XE's qualified suppliers. Ensure XE maintains a highly visible presence in the gas acquisition and trading industry in North America.

Minimum Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent relevant experience, including a minimum of 3 years of natural gas industry experience is required.

  • Understanding of gas markets, the interstate pipeline networks, gas transportation & storage contracts, FERC regulations, and negotiation strategies is required.

  • Must be able to independently negotiate high dollar transactions.

  • Previous experience in direct gas buying/trading including the use of financial hedging instruments or gas transportation-scheduler analyst.

  • Hours will be 6am-3pm including holiday and weekend rotational coverage.

Preferred Requirements
