Controlled Combustion is the leading commercial heating contractor in NYC. We serve a variety of industries, including luxury apartments, hospitals, universities, commercial buildings, and more. With over 150 employees, our team is as diverse as the services we offer.


We are looking for an experienced Senior Commercial Heating Technician / Senior Gas and Oil Burner Service Technician to join our team of Local Union 638-B service technicians.


This position is intended for a skilled field technician who can walk into a commercial boiler room, diagnose the issue, and get equipment running safely and efficiently. The right candidate should have strong hands-on experience servicing commercial gas and oil burners, boilers, controls, and related electrical systems.


This is a field service position serving customer locations throughout the New York Metropolitan area. Senior technicians are expected to work independently, troubleshoot complex service issues, communicate clearly with customers and supervisors, and complete accurate service documentation.

Responsibilities

  • Service, maintain, troubleshoot, and repair commercial gas and oil burners.
  • Fire and adjust burners for safe and efficient operation.
  • Diagnose combustion failures, open limits, electrical issues, control problems, and related burner/boiler issues.
  • Service and maintain atmospheric boilers, condensing boilers, Scotch marine fire tube boilers, and related commercial heating equipment.
  • Troubleshoot electrical circuits, safeties, operating controls, and related system components.
  • Use electrical meters, combustion gas analyzers, hand tools, and other diagnostic equipment in the field.
  • Adjust, install, and troubleshoot commercial temperature controls and related devices.
  • Communicate clearly and professionally with customers, dispatch, supervisors, and other technicians.
  • Complete service reports, job documentation, and follow-up notes accurately and on time.
  • Represent the company professionally at customer locations.
  • Participate in a rotating on-call schedule, overtime, weekend work, and emergency service work as needed.
  • Assist less experienced technicians when needed.

Experience Preferred

  • Commercial gas and/or oil burner service: 3 years preferred
  • Commercial boiler service experience preferred

  • Experience with atmospheric boilers, condensing boilers, and Scotch marine fire tube boilers preferred
  • Experience using combustion gas analyzers, electrical meters, and related diagnostic tools preferred

License / Certification

  • Valid Driver’s License required

Requirements:

Qualifications / Skills

  • Strong understanding of combustion theory.
  • Strong hands-on experience servicing and maintaining commercial gas and oil burners.
  • Ability to independently diagnose and repair burner, boiler, control, and electrical issues.
  • Experience troubleshooting combustion failures, open limits, electrical failures, safeties, and related service issues.
  • Working knowledge of commercial boiler systems, controls, and related heating equipment.
  • Experience with atmospheric boilers, condensing boilers, and Scotch marine fire tube boilers preferred.
  • Proficient with electrical meters, combustion gas analysers, hand tools, and common field service equipment.
  • Ability to fire and adjust burners for safe and efficient operation.
  • Strong customer service and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently, make sound decisions in the field, and escalate issues when appropriate.
  • Reliable, professional, and able to work in a fast-paced commercial service environment.
  • Ability to complete service documentation accurately and on time.
  • Willingness to work overtime, weekends, and participate in a rotating on-call schedule.

Minimum Education and Work Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • At least 3 years of hands-on commercial gas and/or oil burner service experience preferred.
  • Commercial heating, boiler, HVAC, electrical, or related trade experience preferred.
  • Local Union 638-B experience is a plus.
