What is a commercial actor?

Commercial actors are performers hired to appear in advertisements for television, online, radio, or print media. Their main role is to help promote products, services, or brands by delivering lines, demonstrating products, or portraying relatable characters. Commercial actors may work on national campaigns or local ads and often audition specifically for these roles. Unlike film or theater actors, their primary focus is on short-form, persuasive performances aimed at engaging and influencing consumers.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a commercial actor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Commercial Actor, you need strong acting skills, the ability to take direction well, and often formal training or experience in performing arts. Familiarity with on-camera techniques, basic knowledge of industry-standard casting platforms, and sometimes union membership (such as SAG-AFTRA) are typically required. Confidence, adaptability, and excellent communication are standout soft skills for connecting with audiences and collaborating on set. These skills and qualifications ensure you can effectively convey brand messages, meet production needs, and leave a lasting impression in a highly competitive field.

What are the typical challenges commercial actors face during auditions and on set?

Commercial actors often encounter fast-paced auditions where they must quickly adapt to different scripts, products, and character types. On set, they may be asked to deliver lines or emotions in very specific ways to match a brand's image, sometimes with minimal direction and tight timeframes. Flexibility, strong improvisational skills, and the ability to take feedback constructively are essential for success. Additionally, commercial actors need to work collaboratively with directors, producers, and other cast members to ensure the final product effectively communicates the intended message.

What is the difference between Commercial Actor vs Commercial Model?

AspectCommercial ActorCommercial Model
Required CredentialsActing skills, sometimes acting classes or experienceModeling portfolio, appearance, sometimes specific look requirements
Work EnvironmentFilm sets, TV studios, advertising shootsPhoto shoots, runway shows, advertising campaigns
Employer & Industry UsageAdvertising agencies, production companies, casting directorsModeling agencies, brands, photographers

Commercial actors focus on delivering scripted performances in advertisements, often requiring acting skills and experience. Commercial models primarily showcase products or brands through photos or runway, emphasizing appearance and modeling portfolios. While both roles appear in advertising, their skills and work environments differ significantly.

How do actors get commercial jobs?

Commercial actors typically find jobs through talent agencies that submit them for casting calls, or by attending open casting calls and auditions. Building a professional portfolio, having a demo reel, and maintaining an active presence in industry networks can also increase opportunities.

How much do commercial actors get paid?

Commercial actors typically earn between $200 and $2,000 per day, depending on factors such as experience, market, and the project's scope. Rates can vary widely, with experienced actors or those in major markets earning higher fees, and union actors often have set minimum rates established by industry unions like SAG-AFTRA.

How to get acting jobs in commercials?

Commercial actors can find jobs by creating a professional portfolio or headshot, registering with casting agencies, and submitting to online casting platforms. Auditions often require acting skills, a demo reel, and sometimes a specific look or age range; staying persistent and networking within the industry also improves chances of securing commercial roles.

The Opportunity

As a Residential ASL Driver, you are the face of GFL. Operating a modern, fully automated side-loading truck, you will navigate curbside routes to provide seamless waste removal for our neighbors. This is a solo-operator role that rewards independence, precision, and a commitment to safety.

Key Responsibilities
  • Master the Machine: Operate state-of-the-art automated side-loading trucks and hydraulic systems with expert precision.
  • Own Your Route: Safely collect solid waste or recyclables on assigned residential routes, ensuring every customer receives "Green Ribbon" service.
  • Safety First: Conduct rigorous pre- and post-trip inspections. At GFL, safety isn't a box to check—it's our way of life.
  • Professional Pride: Maintain a clean vehicle and professional demeanor, acting as a brand ambassador on the road.
  • Continuous Improvement: Work closely with supervisors to optimize routing and improve efficiency.
What You'll Bring
  • The Credentials: A valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) and at least 2 years of commercial driving experience (or a CDL school certificate).
  • The Strength: Ability to lift, push, or pull up to 50 lbs repetitively and the stamina to handle the physical demands of the road.
  • The Skills: Excellent spatial awareness (backing up 120+ feet in tight spaces) and the ability to recognize unacceptable waste materials.
  • The Mindset: A self-starter attitude with the flexibility to adapt to changing weather conditions and route needs.
Working Conditions & Physical Demands
  • Enjoy the outdoors! You'll be exposed to various weather conditions and the hum of a high-performance fleet.
  • This role requires sitting approximately 75% of the time while driving, with frequent movement for vehicle checks and maintenance.
  • Visual focus and depth perception are critical for navigating high-traffic residential areas safely.
