Summary

The Combination Welder is responsible for performing skilled welding and fabrication activities on industrial piping, equipment, structural components, and related systems in support of construction, maintenance, turnaround, and capital projects. The position performs welding using multiple processes and materials in accordance with approved welding procedures, project specifications, applicable codes and standards, and customer quality requirements.

The Combination Welder works from piping isometrics, construction drawings, specifications, and work packages to prepare, fit, weld, repair, and install piping and related components. The position also supports pipefitters and other craft personnel with piping preparation, fit-up, fabrication, and installation activities when not actively performing welding assignments.

Qualification Requirements 

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or GED preferred.
  • Minimum four (4) years of relevant industrial welding experience preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience welding industrial piping in construction, maintenance, turnaround, or similar heavy industrial environments.
  • Must successfully complete a Company and/or project-required welding test to demonstrate and verify the welding skills, processes, positions, and materials required for the assigned work.
  • Demonstrated ability to perform welding in multiple positions, including 2G, 4G, and 6G, as required by assigned work.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW/Stick) and Gas Tungsten Arc Welding (GTAW/TIG) processes on industrial piping.
  • Experience welding carbon steel, stainless steel, chrome/alloy, and other industrial piping materials applicable to assigned work.
  • Experience welding various pipe sizes, wall thicknesses, and schedules, including Schedule 40, 80, and 160 piping.
  • Ability to read and interpret piping isometrics, construction drawings, weld maps, specifications, welding procedure specifications (WPS), and other technical documents applicable to assigned work.
  • Working knowledge of welding symbols, joint configurations, material identification, filler-metal requirements, preheat/interpass requirements, and other welding variables applicable to assigned procedures.
  • Ability to safely use welding machines, grinders, cutting equipment, hand tools, power tools, and other equipment associated with industrial welding and fabrication.
  • Ability to successfully complete required Company, customer, and site-specific safety training, orientations, and access requirements.
  • Valid Transportation Worker Identification Credential (TWIC) or ability to obtain and maintain one when required by project or customer assignment.
  • Valid driver's license and ability to meet Company driving requirements when driving on Company business is required.
  • NCCER Welding certification or other recognized craft certification preferred.
  • OSHA training or other applicable industry safety training preferred.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities 

  • Strong working knowledge of industrial welding, fabrication, and piping installation methods and practices.
  • Knowledge of SMAW/Stick and GTAW/TIG welding processes and the ability to select and properly use applicable equipment and consumables.
  • Working knowledge of the characteristics and weldability of carbon steel, stainless steel, chrome/alloy, and other materials applicable to assigned work.
  • Ability to understand and follow applicable Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS) and welding requirements for assigned materials, processes, and positions.
  • Ability to read and interpret piping isometrics, construction drawings, welding symbols, weld maps, specifications, and other technical documentation.
  • Knowledge of joint preparation, beveling, fit-up, alignment, root openings, tack welding, interpass cleaning, and other activities necessary to produce acceptable welds.
  • Understanding of how heat input, welding sequence, distortion, shrinkage, and material characteristics can affect completed work.

Essential Functions

  • Perform welding and fabrication activities on industrial piping, equipment, structural components, and related systems using approved welding processes and procedures.
  • Perform SMAW/Stick and GTAW/TIG welding in required positions, including 2G, 4G, and 6G, based on assigned work and maintained qualifications.
  • Weld carbon steel, stainless steel, chrome/alloy, and other materials for which the employee is appropriately tested, qualified, and authorized.
  • Read and interpret piping isometrics, construction drawings, weld maps, welding symbols, specifications, Welding Procedure Specifications (WPS), and work packages.
  • Verify material type, joint configuration, welding process, filler metal, and applicable procedure requirements before beginning welding activities.
  • Prepare welding joints by cleaning, grinding, beveling, aligning, fitting, and otherwise preparing materials in accordance with applicable procedures and specifications.
  • Position, align, clamp, tack, and secure piping and components as necessary to maintain proper fit-up and alignment before and during welding.
  • Set up and safely operate welding machines, leads, torches, regulators, grinders, cutting equipment, and other welding or fabrication equipment.
  • Perform welding in accordance with applicable WPS requirements, including specified welding process, consumables, position, preheat, interpass temperature, and other applicable variables.
  • Monitor weld quality throughout the welding process and correct conditions that could result in unacceptable workmanship.
  • Perform cleaning, grinding, and other required activities between weld passes and upon completion of welding.
  • Visually inspect completed welds and promptly report suspected defects, material concerns, or other quality issues to supervision or quality personnel.
  • Maintain proper identification and control of welding consumables and filler materials in accordance with project and quality requirements.
  • Assist pipefitters with piping layout, preparation, fit-up, fabrication, installation, and related activities when welding assignments are not required.
  • Perform cutting, grinding, preparation, and fabrication activities using approved methods and equipment.
  • Coordinate assigned activities with pipefitters, riggers, other welders, quality personnel, safety personnel, and project supervision.
  • Assist with material handling and rigging activities when trained, qualified, and authorized to perform such work.
  • Follow applicable hot-work permit requirements, fire-prevention controls, barricades, ventilation requirements, and other welding safety procedures.
  • Inspect welding machines, leads, grounds, torches, hoses, regulators, tools, and other equipment before use and promptly report damaged or unsafe equipment.
  • Follow Company safety policies, applicable regulatory requirements, project procedures, and customer site requirements.
  • Participate in pre-task planning, JHAs/JSAs, toolbox talks, safety meetings, inspections, and required training.
  • Exercise stop-work authority when unsafe conditions exist and immediately communicate safety concerns to supervision.
  • Maintain assigned work areas, welding equipment, tools, and materials in a clean, organized, and safe condition.
  • Support weld inspections, nondestructive examination (NDE/NDT), repairs, testing, project turnover, and punch-list activities as required.
  • Perform other duties as assigned consistent with the position's responsibilities, training, qualifications, and authorization. 

Physical Demands

  • Ability to stand and walk for extended periods and frequently bend, stoop, kneel, crouch, squat, reach, climb, balance, push, and pull while performing welding and fabrication activities.
  • Ability to perform welding in multiple positions and body orientations, including standing, kneeling, crouching, bending, and working in restricted-access areas.
  • Ability to perform repetitive hand, arm, and upper-body movements associated with welding, grinding, cutting, fitting, and material handling.
  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds regularly and handle heavier materials or equipment using appropriate assistance or material-handling equipment.
  • Ability to climb stairs and ladders and work from scaffolds, elevated work platforms, pipe racks, and other industrial work areas as required.
  • Ability to work on uneven, muddy, rocky, or otherwise variable walking and working surfaces.
  • Ability to work outdoors in heat, humidity, cold, rain, wind, and other weather conditions.
  • Ability to wear required personal protective equipment (PPE), including but not limited to: 
    • hard hat, safety glasses, welding hood, face shield, gloves, hearing protection, FR clothing, steel-toed footwear, FR clothing, fall protection, respiratory protection and other project-specific PPE. 

Work Environment 

  • Work is primarily performed at active industrial construction, maintenance, turnaround, and customer facilities.
  • Work may be performed in refinery, petrochemical, chemical, LNG, power generation, manufacturing, and other heavy industrial environments.
  • Regular exposure to outdoor weather conditions, temperature extremes, noise, vibration, dust, dirt, fumes, moving equipment, piping systems, and other conditions typical of industrial construction and maintenance.
  • Regular exposure to welding arcs, sparks, hot metal, welding fumes, gases, noise, vibration, dust, moving equipment, outdoor weather conditions, temperature extremes, and other conditions typical of industrial welding and construction.
  • Work may be performed around operating process units, piping systems, elevated work areas, excavations, structures, mobile equipment, and ongoing construction or maintenance activities.
