While both roles focus on academic preparation, College Prep Instructors prepare students for college entrance requirements, often covering a broad curriculum. Test Prep Tutors specialize in preparing students for specific standardized tests like the SAT or ACT. The main difference lies in scope: college prep involves overall readiness, whereas test prep targets test-specific strategies and skills.

How does a College Prep Instructor typically collaborate with school counselors and other educators to support student success?

College Prep Instructors often work closely with school counselors, teachers, and academic advisors to ensure students are prepared for college admissions. This collaboration may involve sharing progress updates, coordinating on student workshops, and developing individualized plans to address academic or personal challenges. By communicating regularly with the broader educational team, College Prep Instructors help provide a cohesive support system that empowers students to reach their post-secondary goals.

What does a College Prep Instructor do?

A College Prep Instructor helps students prepare for college by teaching academic skills, test-taking strategies, and providing guidance on the admissions process. They often assist students with SAT/ACT preparation, essay writing, and developing study habits. These instructors may also offer advice on selecting colleges, completing applications, and accessing financial aid resources. Their goal is to ensure students are academically and emotionally ready for the transition to higher education.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a College Prep Instructor, and why are they important?

To thrive as a College Prep Instructor, you need a strong background in academic subject matter, curriculum planning, and experience with standardized test preparation, often supported by a teaching credential or relevant degree. Familiarity with test preparation platforms, learning management systems (LMS), and assessment tools is typically required. Excellent communication, motivational skills, and the ability to personalize instruction help students achieve their college admission goals. These skills ensure effective guidance, student engagement, and improved college readiness outcomes.

We do not teach "tricks" or how to "beat the test." Rather, we utilize an organic approach that builds students' essential core skills, improving their writing and reading skills in the long term-not just for the SAT or ACT, but for high school, college, and beyond.

As a Math Instructor, you will be expected to:

  • Track your student's progress as they move through Vanguard's unique multi-phase curriculum, engaging students in individualized growth and improvement opportunities along the way.
  • Model professionalism and strong organizational skills by replying to students promptly, maintaining and updating student lesson schedules on our online platform, and holding students accountable for assignments.
  • Spearheaded the development and creative execution of ever-evolving lesson plans and curriculum.
  • Mentor middle and high school students with empathy and an innate understanding that the college application process is becoming increasingly competitive and stressful.

Requirements:

  • Teaching experience in math and/or experience working in a college-level tutoring center (1+ years).
  • GPA of 3.5 or higher.
  • Proficiency in MS Excel, MS Word, MS PowerPoint, and G-Suites.
  • Access to a reliable internet connection and a workspace with minimal noise/distraction.

The ideal candidate will also possess:

  • Experience teaching at the college or community college level.
  • Robust understanding of classroom pedagogy, and the ability to create customized, engaging lesson plans that use practical, real-world examples to inspire a love for learning.
  • Desire to help students recognize, reach for, and realize their fullest potential.
  • A dynamic and outgoing personality.
  • The ability to work both independently and in a team environment.
  • Mastery of SAT and ACT Math, especially the following subjects:
    • Pre-Algebra.
    • Algebra I & II.
    • Geometry.

Why you want to teach with Vanguard College Prep:

  • An elite team of instructors, counselors, and specialists from Ivy League and top universities across the nation who are passionate about fostering student success.
  • Quickly growing start-up environment that emphasizes creativity, collaboration, and leadership, with opportunities for long-term career growth.
  • Competitive compensation structure (dependent on experience) with benefits.
