A College Math Instructor teaches mathematics courses at a postsecondary institution, such as a community college or university. They develop lesson plans, deliver lectures, create assignments and exams, and provide support to students through office hours. Their goal is to help students understand mathematical concepts and apply them effectively. Instructors may also participate in curriculum development and stay updated with advancements in mathematics and education. Some positions may require research or committee involvement, depending on the institution.
A typical workweek for a College Math Instructor involves preparing and delivering lectures, developing assignments and exams, holding office hours for student support, and grading assessments. Instructors also participate in faculty meetings, curriculum development, and occasionally advisory or committee work. Collaboration with colleagues in the math department is common, particularly for coordinating courses or integrating new teaching methods. Balancing teaching responsibilities with departmental contributions and individual student support makes for a dynamic and rewarding schedule.
To thrive as a College Math Instructor, you need deep knowledge of mathematics, a graduate degree (typically at least a master's), and proven teaching or instructional experience. Familiarity with learning management systems (LMS), mathematical software (such as MATLAB or Mathematica), and digital assessment tools is often required. Excellent communication, patience, and the ability to motivate a diverse group of students are standout soft skills for this position. These abilities ensure effective curriculum delivery, foster student understanding, and create an engaging learning environment critical for academic success.

The First Year Math Program (FYM) at Boise State provides support and instruction for foundational mathematics courses, and up through precalculus. These courses are closely coordinated to ensure consistency in instruction and student support across sections. FYM courses are: MATH 103, 133, 143, 144, and 149.
The Mathematics Department offers a full range of college-level courses, including calculus and more advanced subjects such as linear algebra, differential equations, and abstract mathematics. These classes support both general education and specialized study for STEM and math majors. Some Math Department courses are coordinated, and if you are selected to teach, you would be connected with the course coordinator for support and guidance.
FYM and the Math Department maintain a shared pool of adjuncts who are able to teach primarily in-person classes. Classes meet during the typical workday with some early morning and evening sections available as well. Courses are coordinated in terms of materials and assessments; attendance at some coordination meetings may be required. Adjuncts can teach up to 11 credits per semester; this could include a mix of courses across Math and FYM.
