Job description


Job Description: Perform a variety of custodial and general housekeeping duties involving the care of and cleaning of college owned buildings. Perform general housekeeping duties involving the cleaning/sanitizing and stocking of supplies, equipment uses (scrubbers, high speed and low speed floor machines, carpet cleaners, carpet extractors, wet vacs, etc.) in college buildings to include offices, dormitory areas, restrooms, classrooms, stairs, balconies, stair landings, lobbies, ground areas in close proximity of your assigned areas, activity buildings and eating houses, etc.
Responsibilities:
  • Clean, scrub, mop, shampoo and polish floors,
  • Clean walls, windows, woodwork, venetian blinds, fixtures, carpets, entrance/exit mats and other surfaces.
  • Sweep and clean walkways
  • Clean Showers in assigned dorm/dorms
  • Pick up litter in and around building areas.
  • Clean and disinfect restrooms
  • Empty trash containers and sanitize such containers to meet college standards and sanitary requirements on a as needed basis.
  • Operate stripping, waxing, polishing, shampooing and vacuum machines. (will provide training)
  • Change attachments to necessary equipment and perform routine preventative maintenance on equipment/tools.
  • Pull trash and recycling and place in assigned locations for pick up.
  • Report items requiring service or repair to Superintendent
  • Monitor security of buildings on assigned shifts.
  • Assist preparations for set-ups/ take downs for special events when needed
  • Store equipment as required.
  • Keep inventory of tools and supplies needed to complete all necessary task
  • Complete full walk throughs of assigned areas daily (address all issues)
  • Attend all training events required to remain updated with new technologies, processes and procedures pertaining to the janitorial industry
  • Labeled as Essential staff to Davidson College (Required to Work)
  • Fill in for absent team members on a as needed basis to meet the needs of Building Services
  • Work evenings and weekends on occasions
  • Maintain a welcoming environment for students/staff
  • Maintain good employee relations

Requirements:
  • 1 year or less work experience in the Janitorial/Custodial industry
  • Dependable-ability to be at work daily and on-time

Physical Functions:
  • Bend, squat, stand, kneel, walk
  • Regularly ascend/descend stairs (daily)
  • Walk for long/short distances
  • Reach above shoulders repetitively, handle keys, tool, objects, push, pull, and carry items (repeatedly)
  • Work indoor/outdoor environment subject to climate change
  • Ability to lift, push, and pull 25-75 lbs. daily and repeatedly.

Preferred:
  • Knowledge of floor cleaning/care procedures, techniques and equipment
  • Stripping & Waxing
  • 1 year or Janitorial/Custodial experience

Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
Ability to understand and read written and verbal instructions and follow through. Some knowledge of cleaning equipment and technique desired. Ability to interact positively with a wide variety of customers. Working knowledge of buffers, hand trucks, dollies, pressure washers, wet vacuums, floor scrubbers, carpet cleaners and carpet extraction. Must have the ability to always have situation awareness for safety. Must have basic problem-solving skills. Have working knowledge of best practices for the cleaning industry including chemical, tools and equipment; OSHA regulations, and blood borne pathogens, and personal protective equipment (preferred). The ability to perform basic math. Willing to be a team player in all of Building Services tasks in case of absences or on an as-needed basis. Ability to read and comprehend
