Professional Experience/ Qualifications
  • Five or more years of experience with ERP systems management.
  • Expert-level proficiency with proficiency Oracle PL/SQL
  • Demonstrated expertise with AI tools and technology.
  • Expert at scripting in one or more of the following: Python, Linux Shell script, or Windows Powershell.
  • Effectively runs large requirement gathering meetings, solicits needs and creates high-level requirements documents.
  • Ability to work with vendors to troubleshoot, set up demonstrations, and understand future product direction. Attends and represents Colgate professionally at conferences.
  • Expert understanding of relational databases and ability to create and manage database structures as needed for development and troubleshooting.

Department Statement
The Systems Analyst and AI Programmer supports the Colgate mission by analyzing needs, providing technical guidance, helping with process improvement, and recommending and implementing solutions for academic and administrative areas of the university. This position is
responsible for optimizing the user experience of assigned software and systems and developing sustainable interfaces and in-house solutions. The Programmer will engage with and guide Colgate ITS and campus partners in the evaluation and adoption of AI tools. The successful candidate will have a mastery of AI concepts such as orchestration, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) technology, and one or more AI frameworks or tools. Familiarity with AI concepts and usage within a complex software environment is a key skillset for this position Further responsibilities include maintaining assigned software versions, including co-requisite database and web server software such as Oracle RDBMS, Apache Tomcat, etc.
Employment is subject to the terms and conditions of Colgate University Human Resources policy, consistent with the laws of New York state. Normal schedule is daily, Monday through Friday concurrent with the business hours of the office. Adjustments to the normal schedule to accommodate evening, overnight, weekend and holiday work as required for system and service maintenance and upgrades.
Accountabilities
Gather requirements and assess functional needs to help improve processes. Provide technical consultation on business processes and how they interact with software systems. Translate end user behavior into recommended improvements in features and functionality. Leads implementations for new software systems when appropriate. Maximize the usefulness and performance of assigned systems and integration points. Deploy new modules, upgrades and fixes to assigned software applications and systems. Assist in establishing requirements, methods and procedures for routine maintenance.
Additional Responsibilities:
  • Evaluate new vendor-provided AI functionality for fit and function within the
  • University. Evaluate compatibility of external AI tools within the context of existing systems.
  • Develop custom solutions where necessary and appropriate.
  • Perform testing, including error handling.
  • Develop user guides and training documentation.
  • Provide Database Administration for assigned systems such as Ellucian Banner and Ellucian Degreeworks.
  • Following generally accepted practices in programming and software development, develop system interfaces and system integrations.
  • Research and consider hosted and SaaS solutions. Evaluate vendor solutions to ensure compliance with requirements and cost-effectiveness.
  • Work with vendors to resolve problems and develop solutions.
  • Design, create and manage database structures for development, testing and production.
  • Lead large projects and actively participate on assigned projects. Meet deadlines.
  • Ability to effectively communicate with customers in an appropriate level of detail.
  • Assist ITS in the development of best practices and actively engage in improving ITS and its processes
  • Participate in professional development activities.
  • Perform other related duties and projects as assigned.
