POSITION SUMMARY
Position: Design Engineer
Reports to: Design Manager
Location: Greenville, SC
AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIES
The Design Engineer is responsible for developing accurate, manufacturable racking system designs that meet customer requirements while optimizing cost, safety, and production efficiency. This role owns the creation and release of 2D drawings, 3D models, and bills of material, ensuring alignment with engineering standards and shop capabilities. The Design Engineer works cross-functionally with project management, manufacturing, and installation teams to deliver high-quality, custom storage solutions.
  • Lead Design Reviews with Customers to ensure all requirements are captured
  • Create and release complete drawing packages and BOMs for production
  • Ensure all designs are aligned with manufacturing capabilities, tooling, and standard parts
  • Manage revision control and engineering changes throughout project lifecycle
  • Collaborate directly with production to validate design feasibility
  • Participate in shop floor reviews, first-article builds, and troubleshooting
  • Incorporate feedback from fabrication and installation teams into future designs
SKILLS AND ABILITIES
  • Proficiency in Autodesk 2D and Inventor, with experience creating detailed drawings, models, and renderings.
  • Strong understanding of structural design principles, materials, and manufacturing processes.
  • Ability to analyze project requirements and provide innovative, cost-effective design solutions.
  • Strong problem-solving skills with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Effective communication and collaboration skills for working cross-functionally with project management, engineering, and manufacturing teams.
  • Time management and organizational skills to manage multiple projects with competing deadlines.
  • Ability to adapt designs based on feedback, changes in scope, or evolving project needs.
  • Working knowledge of RMI / ANSI MH16.1 standards (or willingness to learn quickly)
  • Experience with structural steel design, load calculations, and connection detailing
  • Understanding of fabrication processes (laser, punching, forming, welding, powder coating)
  • Ability to design for DFM/DFA (Design for Manufacturability and Assembly)
EDUCATION AND/OR TRAINING
  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 2–4 years of relevant design engineering experience, preferably in structural racking, steel fabrication, or related industry.
  • Training and hands-on experience with Autodesk 2D and Inventor required.
  • Familiarity with rendering software and design documentation best practices preferred
KEY PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES
  • Produce accurate, production-ready drawings with minimal revision cycles ( lt;X% rework)
  • Meet design-to-release timelines aligned with project schedules
  • Optimize designs for cost (material utilization, manufacturability, labor efficiency)
  • Maintain BOM and drawing accuracy in ERP system
  • Reduce engineering change orders caused by design errors
  • Support quote accuracy through early design input
WORK ENVIRONMENT
This role is based in an office setting, with the majority of work conducted at a desk/computer using design software. Regular collaboration on the production floor is required to review designs and ensure alignment with manufacturing processes. Travel ( lt;10%) may be required for customer meetings or project site visits.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
This position predominantly involves sitting for extended periods while working at a computer. Some tasks may require walking or standing on the production floor to review equipment or project builds. Good manual dexterity and coordination are required for design work. The role does not involve frequent physical activity or heavy lifting.
