What is a cognitive psychologist?
What does a cognitive psychologist do?
The duties of a cognitive psychologist vary with the work environment. In some positions, you focus primarily on the study and research of human behavior. You conduct studies that center on gaining a better understanding of perception, cognition, memory, or other brain processes for the development of algorithms to explain and predict them. You then publish your findings in a scientific journal and share them with your colleagues at conferences. Other cognitive psychologists work to diagnose and treat mental health issues in a clinical setting. You can find employment with schools where you provide counseling to students or in private practice. In some positions, you have management responsibilities that require you to supervise team members.
What types of projects or research does a cognitive psychologist typically work on within academic or organizational settings?
What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a cognitive psychologist, and why are they important?
What is the difference between Cognitive Psychologist vs Clinical Psychologist?
| Aspect | Cognitive Psychologist | Clinical Psychologist |
|---|---|---|
| Required Credentials | Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.), specialized training in cognition | Doctoral degree (Ph.D. or Psy.D.), training in mental health diagnosis and therapy |
| Work Environment | Research settings, universities, labs, sometimes healthcare | Hospitals, clinics, private practices, mental health facilities |
| Employer & Industry | Academic institutions, research organizations, tech companies | Healthcare providers, mental health clinics, hospitals |
While both roles require advanced degrees, Cognitive Psychologists focus on understanding mental processes through research and experiments, often working in academic or research settings. Clinical Psychologists diagnose and treat mental health disorders, working directly with patients in clinical environments. The choice depends on whether you prefer research and cognitive studies or clinical practice and therapy.

For many patients, psychological care is essential to coping with distress, uncertainty, and life transitions brought on by cancer. For others, mental health concerns may impact treatment adherence, recovery, or quality of life. In every case, care must be delivered with clinical expertise, compassion, and respect.
Are you passionate about improving the psychological health of adults affected by cancer and contributing to whole-person, integrated care? If so, we invite you to join the Legacy community.

The Psychologist provides comprehensive psychological services to adult oncology patients, including evaluation, diagnosis, and treatment of emotional, cognitive, and behavioral concerns related to cancer and its treatment.
Responsibilities include:
- Delivering evidence-based psychological care to adults coping with cancer across the continuum of care (diagnosis, treatment, surveillance/survivorship, and end-of-life).
- Addressing distress, anxiety, depression, trauma, adjustment difficulties, and cognitive changes associated with cancer and medical treatments.
- Supporting patients whose psychological symptoms may affect engagement in medical care, treatment adherence, or overall health outcomes.
- Collaborating closely with oncologists, nurses, social workers, and other interdisciplinary team members to provide integrated, patient-centered care.
- Offering consultation and guidance to the care team regarding behavioral health considerations, coping strategies, and family dynamics.
- Conducting psychological assessments and, when appropriate, cognitive screening or testing to inform diagnosis and treatment planning.
- Monitoring treatment progress and adjusting interventions to optimize psychological and medical outcomes.
- Adhering to established professional, departmental, and program standards in oncology and behavioral health care.
- Bridging/transitioning care for patients who have psychological needs that extend beyond the scope of the psycho-oncology service.
Education:

Experience:
- Minimum of two years of post-doctoral experience providing psychological services in a medical setting, preferably with adult oncology or other complex specialty medical populations.

- Strong competency in addressing psychological responses to cancer, including adjustment, grief, and health-related anxiety.
- Experience treating cognitive and psychological concerns related to or exacerbated by medical conditions (e.g., treatment-related cognitive changes, chronic illness adjustment).
- Ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary medical team and communicate clearly with both patients and providers.
- Commitment to culturally responsive, trauma-informed, and patient-centered care
- Current licensure as a psychologist by the applicable State Board of Psychologist Examiners.
- Must be eligible for membership in the hospital medical staff.
