Coding Internships information

What is a coding internship?

A coding internship is a temporary position where students or recent graduates gain hands-on experience in software development, programming, and related technical skills. Interns typically work on real-world projects under the guidance of experienced developers, learning coding best practices, debugging, and collaborating in a team environment. These internships can be paid or unpaid and are often offered by tech companies, startups, and other organizations looking to train and mentor aspiring software engineers.

What do coding interns do?

Coding interns are often assigned tasks that range from debugging and writing code modules to contributing to team projects under the guidance of experienced developers. Depending on the company and internship program, you may work on front-end web development, backend services, mobile apps, or even participate in code reviews and software testing. Interns frequently attend team meetings, collaborate with other interns and full-time engineers, and present progress updates. This hands-on experience not only helps you apply your academic knowledge but also builds your skills for full-time positions after graduation.

What skills and qualifications are needed for a coding internship?

To thrive in a Coding Internship, you should have a foundational understanding of programming languages such as Python, Java, or JavaScript, often supported by coursework or relevant projects. Familiarity with version control systems like Git, integrated development environments (IDEs), and basic knowledge of development frameworks is typically expected. Strong problem-solving skills, a willingness to learn, and effective communication help interns contribute meaningfully within their teams. These abilities are crucial for adapting to new technologies, collaborating with colleagues, and rapidly building technical competence in a professional setting.

Can I get a coding internship with no experience?

Coding internships often accept applicants with little or no prior experience, especially if they demonstrate a willingness to learn and basic knowledge of programming languages like Python, Java, or C++. Many internships provide training and mentorship to help interns develop skills such as coding, debugging, and using development tools. Having a strong foundation in problem-solving and a portfolio of personal projects can improve your chances of securing an internship without formal experience.

How much do coding internships pay?

Coding internships typically pay between $15 and $30 per hour, depending on the company, location, and the intern's skill level. Paid internships often include opportunities to gain experience with programming languages, tools, and collaborative projects, and may be full-time or part-time during the summer or academic year.

How to get a coding internship?

To get a coding internship, build a strong foundation in programming languages like Python or Java, create a portfolio of projects, and gain experience through online courses or coding challenges. Apply to internships through company websites, university programs, or internship platforms, and prepare for technical interviews to demonstrate your skills.

Job description

Weโ€™re looking for Software Engineering Interns to help build and scale the systems that power Datadogโ€™s observability and security platform. Interns contribute directly to real-world engineering challenges across backend, frontend, infrastructure, data engineering, and developer tooling while working alongside experienced engineers and mentors. Youโ€™ll help design, build, and improve systems that process and analyze massive volumes of metrics, logs, and application data in real time. Whether youโ€™re interested in distributed systems, Kubernetes, AI-powered products like Bits AI, or developer platform tooling, youโ€™ll work on meaningful projects that deliver impact to customers at global scale.

At Datadog, we place value in our office culture - the relationships and collaboration it builds and the creativity it brings to the table. We operate as a hybrid workplace to ensure our Datadogs can create a work-life harmony that best fits them.

What Youโ€™ll Do:
  • Contribute to production systems that process and analyze large-scale observability and application data in real time
  • Build and improve distributed systems across backend infrastructure, developer platforms, and cloud-native services
  • Help identify and solve performance, reliability, and scalability challenges in critical services supporting Datadogโ€™s growing customer base
  • Own and deliver technical projects from design through deployment with support from experienced engineers and mentors
  • Develop technical expertise through handsโ€‘on experience with technologies such as Kubernetes, distributed systems, and cloudโ€‘native infrastructure
  • Collaborate with fellow interns, mentors, and engineers while building software that delivers impact at global scale
Who You Are:
  • Pursuing a degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related technical field, or have equivalent practical experience
  • Targeting a 2028 fullโ€‘time start date
  • Demonstrate strong computer science fundamentals, including data structures, algorithms, and software design
  • Comfortable coding in one or more programming languages and excited to use AI-assisted tools to enhance software development and problem solving
  • Have experience using AI coding tools or a strong interest in learning how to use them effectively, while exploring how AI can improve engineering practices and products
  • Available to work fullโ€‘time from the Datadog New York or Boston office during the internship program dates:
    • January 4 - April 23, 2027

Datadog values people from all walks of life. We know not everyone will meet all the above qualifications on day one. Thatโ€™s okay. If youโ€™re passionate about technology and want to grow your experience, we encourage you to apply.

Benefits and Growth:
  • Work on meaningful technical challenges alongside engineers across the globe
  • Participate in mentorship and buddy programs designed to support learning and development
  • Join an inโ€‘person intern cohort and expand your network through engineering talks, social events, and community engagement opportunities throughout your internship
  • Receive relocation support and travel benefits where applicable
  • Enjoy office perks including snacks, drinks, and catered lunches on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday

Benefits and Growth listed above may vary based on the country of your employment and the nature of your employment with Datadog.
