Job description

North Star Fishing Company is dedicated to producing the highest quality frozen-at-sea groundfish products in the world. We accomplish our mission with a commitment to quality, safety, attention to detail, and the health of the North Pacific fishery resource. We are one of the largest producers of frozen-at-sea flatfish, cod, pollock, and other groundfish, distributing seafood worldwide. We manage three trawl catcher-processor vessels operating in the Bering Sea, Aleutian Islands, and Gulf of Alaska. Join us for exciting job opportunities! Position: Mate Mates work aboard processing vessels in the Bering Sea, Pacific Ocean, Gulf of Alaska, and Aleutian Islands. They command and are responsible for the safe operation of the vessel and crew, under the Master's direction. Mates may command the vessel in the Master's absence for a specified period. Requirements: Coast Guard License Uninspected Fishing Industry Vessel license required: 1600 GT on the Unimak and Arica, and 4200 GT on the North Star. Minimum of 3 years' experience onboard H&G vessels in Alaskan waters. Responsibilities: Ensure safe operation of the factory trawler and oversee the crew, under the Master's guidance. Navigate and maneuver the vessel using charts, navigational aids, and electronic equipment, ensuring compliance with COLREGS and Coast Guard requirements. Direct fishing operations at night, record activities in the ship's log. Implement and support safety and environmental policies; supervise medical and safety activities; conduct safety drills; act as Safety Officer and Fire Team Leader. Physical Abilities and Skills: Work 12 hours/day, 7 days/week in all weather conditions. Understand instructions and safety rules in English. Board and exit the vessel independently. Climb steep stairs and ladders. Be away from land-based medical attention for up to 3 months. Share spaces with crew, including quarters, dining, and bathrooms. Schedule: Up to 12 hours/day, 7 days/week. Trip durations range from 7 to 18 days, depending on the vessel. Compensation & Benefits: Pay is crew share-based, varying with catch, fishery, season, trip length, and quotas. Free room and board. Eligible for 401K and health/dental benefits upon meeting eligibility requirements. Salary Range: $120,000 - $145,000 annually. Crew are paid a share of the catch, with trip lengths averaging 13-20 days, depending on fishing conditions. The vessel fishes a set number of trips per season based on quota.
