What is a coating material scientist?

Coating material scientists are professionals who research, develop, and improve coatings such as paints, films, or finishes applied to surfaces for protection, decoration, or functional purposes. They study the chemical and physical properties of materials to create coatings that meet specific needs like corrosion resistance, durability, or enhanced performance. These scientists often work in industries such as automotive, aerospace, electronics, and manufacturing, collaborating with engineers and product designers to ensure coatings are safe, effective, and environmentally compliant.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a coating material scientist?

To thrive as a Coating Material Scientist, you need a strong background in chemistry, materials science, and surface engineering, typically supported by a relevant degree (such as a BS, MS, or PhD) in these fields. Familiarity with analytical instruments like SEM, XPS, and FTIR, as well as experience with coating formulation, application techniques, and industry standards, is essential. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective communication skills help you successfully collaborate with cross-disciplinary teams and drive innovation. These skills and qualifications are crucial for developing advanced coatings that meet performance, safety, and regulatory requirements in various industries.

What are some typical challenges a coating material scientist faces when developing new protective coatings?

Coating Material Scientists often encounter challenges such as ensuring coatings adhere effectively to various substrates, optimizing formulations for durability and environmental resistance, and balancing performance with cost and regulatory requirements. Additionally, scaling up lab-developed coatings for mass production can introduce unforeseen issues with consistency and application methods. Close collaboration with engineers, quality assurance teams, and production staff is essential to address these complexities and ensure successful product launches.

Our components are found in spacecrafts and defibrillators - from outer space to inside our bodies, and in products we use every day. We have the broadestย selectionย of capacitor technologies in the industry, including an expanding range of electromechanical devices and electromagnetic compatibility solutions

Job Summary

KEMET is seeking a Material Scientist at our Simpsonville, South Carolina facility.ย  This is an onsite role.ย  This individual will conduct laboratory-based research to develop new polymer, inorganic and hybrid thin-film coatings, providing technical direction and bridging the gap between R&D and production.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct laboratory-based research to develop new polymer, inorganic, and hybrid thin-film coatings.
  • Research and develop diverse coating processes including dip coatings, spray coatings, PVD, CVD, and plated techniques to meet specific performance targets.
  • Lead the design of novel coating architecture to improve or optimize the performance of current product lines.
  • Provide technical direction for selecting and qualifying new coating materials based on functional requirements (e.g., barrier, dielectric, or conductive properties).
  • Apply engineering and scientific research methods to refine existing coating processes for better consistency and yield.
  • Bridge the gap between R&D and production by providing technical support for the scale-up of new coating materials.
  • Work with multi-disciplinary teams to perform laboratory work that improves product performance and resolves customer technical issues.
  • Manage multiple research projects simultaneously, ensuring milestones are met fromย initialย concept through to characterizationย

            Qualifications, Education and Experience:

            • ย Masterโ€™s or PhD in Materials Science, Polymer Science, Chemistry, Chemical Engineering, or a related field with 1โ€“5 years of experience in polymer and inorganic materials orย B.S. degree with a strongย track recordย of 5โ€“10 years in the successful development of diverse coating systems.ย
