What Does a Coating Inspector Do?

A coating inspector checks industrial equipment to ensure protective coatings were correctly applied and minimize corrosion risk. They go through rigorous training to learn how to identify problems in coating applications and to suggest which types of coatings will protect the materials from corroding. Manufacturing plants, roadway projects such as bridges, and other major industries that utilize paint need coating inspectors for quality assurance.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a Coating Inspector, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Coating Inspector, you need strong knowledge of surface preparation, coating application processes, industry standards, and relevant inspection techniques, often supported by certifications like NACE or SSPC. Familiarity with inspection tools such as dry film thickness gauges, holiday detectors, and documentation software is crucial. Attention to detail, effective communication, and problem-solving abilities are standout soft skills in this field. These competencies ensure coating systems are applied safely and effectively, protecting assets from corrosion and ensuring compliance with project specifications.

What are some common challenges Coating Inspectors face when working on large-scale construction projects?

Coating Inspectors on large construction sites often encounter challenges such as coordinating with multiple contractors to ensure coating schedules align with project timelines, dealing with varying weather conditions that can impact coating application and curing, and maintaining strict adherence to industry standards while under tight deadlines. Effective communication with project managers, applicators, and quality control teams is essential to address issues quickly and maintain coating integrity. Navigating these challenges requires strong attention to detail, flexibility, and a proactive approach to problem-solving.

Job description

Position Summary

We are seeking an experienced Painter / Concrete Restoration Superintendent to oversee field operations for commercial painting, waterproofing, and concrete restoration projects throughout South Florida. This position is responsible for managing crews, subcontractors, schedules, quality control, safety compliance, and daily site operations to ensure projects are completed safely, efficiently, and to the company’s standards.

The ideal candidate is a hands-on field leader with strong knowledge of painting systems, surface preparation, waterproofing, stucco/concrete repairs, coatings, swing stage operations, and restoration procedures. This is not a corporate office-style superintendent role — we are looking for someone who understands the realities of field production, can lead crews effectively, solve problems quickly, and keep projects moving.

Job Responsibilities

  • Oversee daily field operations from project startup through final completion.
  • Supervise painting, waterproofing, and concrete restoration crews on occupied and active job sites.
  • Coordinate manpower, subcontractors, deliveries, equipment, inspections, and project schedules.
  • Review project drawings, specifications, coating systems, and restoration details to ensure proper execution.
  • Monitor productivity, workmanship, and quality control throughout all phases of work.
  • Conduct daily site walkthroughs to identify and correct safety hazards immediately.
  • Enforce OSHA standards, company safety policies, PPE requirements, and conduct toolbox talks regularly.
  • Coordinate with project managers regarding schedules, production goals, material needs, and project challenges.
  • Maintain accurate daily reports, site photos, labor tracking, and project documentation.
  • Ensure proper staging, site cleanliness, material storage, and protection of surrounding areas.
  • Assist with project sequencing, logistics planning, and maintaining workflow efficiency.
  • Support punch list completion and successful project closeout.
  • Communicate professionally with clients, inspectors, property managers, and residents when required.
  • Verify all work is completed according to manufacturer specifications and company quality standards.

Preferred Experience

  • Commercial painting
  • Concrete restoration
  • Waterproofing systems
  • Stucco repairs
  • Sealants and caulking
  • Swing stage and scaffold operations
  • Pressure cleaning and surface preparation
  • Coating applications
  • Occupied condominium or multifamily projects
  • Exterior restoration projects

Work Environment & Physical Requirements

  • Work is performed on active construction and restoration job sites in varying weather conditions.
  • Ability to walk large job sites, climb ladders and scaffolding, and work on uneven surfaces.
  • Ability to work at heights when necessary.
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs. as needed.
  • Must wear required personal protective equipment (PPE) at all times.
  • Position may require early mornings, weekends, and occasional travel depending on project demands.

Required Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a Superintendent or field leadership role within commercial painting, waterproofing, or concrete restoration.
  • Strong knowledge of painting systems, waterproofing applications, surface preparation, and restoration procedures.
  • Ability to read and interpret plans, specifications, and project schedules.
  • Experience managing field crews and coordinating multiple trades.
  • OSHA 10 Certification required (OSHA 30 preferred).
  • Valid Florida Driver’s License required.
  • Ability to pass a Level II background check.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and manage multiple priorities simultaneously.
  • Proficiency with smartphones, email, and basic computer software for reporting and communication.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish) preferred.

What We’re Looking For

  • A leader who leads by example and takes ownership of the job site.
  • Someone dependable, proactive, organized, and solutions-oriented.
  • A superintendent who understands production, quality, and accountability.
  • A team player who can maintain professionalism while managing crews and deadlines.
  • Someone who takes pride in delivering clean, high-quality work safely and efficiently.

Compensation & Benefits

  • Compensation based on experience and qualifications.
  • Company vehicle or vehicle allowance (if applicable).
  • Paid time off and holidays.
  • Opportunities for growth within the company.
