General Summary

Holman Success Center provides an unparalleled experience for future higher education practitioners and counselors. Our close-knit staff works solo, in small teams, and in large collaborative groups to assist all students in making successful transitions to-and through-college.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities

Your role as a graduate assistant for HSC is multi-faceted and includes providing early-alert outreach and Success Coaching to a caseload of students. Additionally, you may serve on one or more project teams, which could include:
Managing our presence at SOAR (incoming student orientation)

  • Monitoring Eagle Study Tables, our structured study space
  • Media and Marketing
  • Creating and facilitating our Academic Success Series workshops
  • Program assessment
  • Professional development
  • Supervising Supplemental Instruction Leaders (SILs), tutors, or Peer Academic Coaches

From this assistantship, you will gain knowledge, skills, and hands-on experience in multiple aspects of student support.

Minimum Qualifications:

Excellent communication skills, including the ability to write professional emails and create polished documents, excellent organizational, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills. Successful applicants will have a degree of technological savvy sufficient to use our learning management system (Canvas) and online scheduling and note-taking tools. You must have the desire to learn and grow while also encouraging the same in your co-workers.

Preferred Qualifications:

Knowledge of Eastern Michigan University and its policies and student population, previous teaching and/or group facilitation experience. Priority is given to candidates who are able to commit to 2 consecutive years.

Special Instructions:

A Graduate Assistantship covers Fall and Winter semesters. Eligibility for a GA position includes the following:
You must be registered for at least 6 graduate credit hours each semester
Maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA in all courses
Show satisfactory progress toward program completion
This 100% position carries a stipend of $10,200 per year with a 20-hour-per-week work commitment. You would also receive a tuition scholarship for up to 18 credit hours per year (9 graduate-level credit hours per semester). Fees are not covered by this award.
