How much do co2 refrigeration jobs pay per hour?

As of Jun 13, 2026, the average hourly pay for co2 refrigeration in the United States is $28.97, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $24.04 and $32.93 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges faced by technicians working with CO2 refrigeration systems, and how can they be addressed?

Technicians working with CO2 refrigeration systems often encounter challenges such as managing high operating pressures, ensuring leak detection, and maintaining system efficiency. The high pressure of CO2 systems requires specialized equipment and rigorous safety protocols. Staying current with training and using proper tools are essential for troubleshooting and repairs. Collaborating closely with engineers and other technicians helps in sharing expertise and addressing complex issues efficiently, fostering a supportive team environment.

What is CO2 in refrigeration?

In refrigeration, CO2 refers to carbon dioxide used as a natural refrigerant in systems like CO2 refrigeration. It is environmentally friendly, non-flammable, and operates at high pressures, requiring specialized skills and equipment for installation and maintenance.

What is the difference between Co2 Refrigeration vs Refrigeration Technician?

AspectCo2 RefrigerationRefrigeration Technician
CertificationsHVAC/R certifications, specialized training in CO2 systemsHVAC/R certifications, general refrigeration training
Work EnvironmentCommercial, industrial, and specialized CO2 systemsResidential, commercial, and industrial refrigeration systems
Industry UsageFood processing, supermarkets, cold storage with CO2 systemsAppliance repair, HVAC, general refrigeration services

Co2 Refrigeration specialists focus on systems using CO2 as a refrigerant, requiring specialized training and certifications. Refrigeration Technicians handle a broader range of refrigeration systems, including traditional refrigerants. Both roles are essential in the refrigeration industry but differ in system focus and expertise.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CO2 Refrigeration Technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CO2 Refrigeration Technician, you need expertise in refrigeration principles, CO2 system operation, and relevant HVAC certifications such as EPA Section 608. Familiarity with CO2 transcritical refrigeration systems, pressure controls, leak detection tools, and programmable logic controllers (PLCs) is typically required. Strong problem-solving skills, attention to detail, and effective communication are valuable soft skills in this role. These skills and qualifications are essential to ensure safe, efficient, and compliant operation and maintenance of advanced refrigeration systems.

How much does a refrigeration tech make?

A refrigeration technician's average salary varies based on experience and certifications but typically ranges from $40,000 to $70,000 annually. In regions with high demand, experienced techs with EPA certification and HVAC skills can earn higher wages, especially if working in commercial or industrial refrigeration environments.

How much does CO2 refrigeration cost?

The cost of CO2 refrigeration systems varies depending on size, complexity, and installation requirements, typically ranging from $10,000 to $50,000 or more for commercial setups. Job roles in CO2 refrigeration often require knowledge of system design, installation, and maintenance, which can influence project costs and budgets.

How much does a refrigeration technician make?

A refrigeration technician's average salary in the region is around $45,000 to $65,000 annually, depending on experience, certifications, and the complexity of systems worked on. Skilled technicians with EPA certification and experience in commercial or industrial refrigeration can earn higher wages, especially with overtime or specialized skills. Salaries may vary based on location, employer, and demand for refrigeration services.

What is CO2 refrigeration?

CO2 refrigeration refers to the use of carbon dioxide (CO2), also known as R-744, as a refrigerant in cooling systems. CO2 is considered an environmentally friendly alternative to traditional refrigerants because it has a very low global warming potential and no ozone depletion potential. CO2 refrigeration systems are commonly used in supermarkets, cold storage warehouses, and industrial applications due to their efficiency and sustainability. These systems can operate in both subcritical and transcritical cycles, depending on the ambient temperature and application. As the demand for eco-friendly cooling solutions grows, CO2 refrigeration is becoming increasingly popular in the HVACR industry.
