Co Op Robotics Software Engineer information

What does a co op robotics software engineer do?

A Co Op Robotics Software Engineer is a student or recent graduate who works with a robotics team to develop, test, and improve software for robots. They often contribute to programming robot behaviors, integrating sensors, and troubleshooting code under the guidance of experienced engineers. This role provides valuable hands-on experience in robotics, software development, and teamwork within a real-world engineering environment. Co-op positions are typically part-time or temporary, designed to complement academic studies and prepare students for future full-time roles in robotics.

What types of projects and technologies might a co op robotics software engineer typically work on during their placement?

As a Co Op Robotics Software Engineer, you can expect to be involved in hands-on projects such as developing and testing algorithms for robot perception, motion planning, or control systems. You'll often work with technologies like ROS (Robot Operating System), C++, Python, and simulation tools such as Gazebo. Collaboration is common, as you'll work closely with hardware engineers, senior software developers, and QA teams to integrate your code with actual robotic systems. This role provides valuable exposure to both software development and real-world robotics applications, offering a well-rounded experience for those pursuing a career in robotics.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a co op robotics software engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Co Op Robotics Software Engineer, you need a solid understanding of programming languages (such as C++, Python, or ROS), robotics principles, and typically enrollment in an engineering or computer science degree program. Experience with simulation tools (like Gazebo), version control systems (like Git), and relevant robotics frameworks is highly valuable. Strong problem-solving abilities, teamwork, and effective communication distinguish top performers in this role. These skills and qualities enable efficient development, integration, and troubleshooting of robotic systems in collaborative engineering environments.

What is the difference between Co Op Robotics Software Engineer vs Robotics Software Engineer?

AspectCo Op Robotics Software EngineerRobotics Software Engineer
Required CredentialsTypically pursuing or holding a bachelor's degree in robotics, computer science, or related fieldsUsually holds a bachelor's or master's degree in robotics, computer science, or engineering
Work EnvironmentInternship or cooperative education setting, often part-time or temporaryFull-time employment in robotics development teams
Employer & Industry UsageUsed by companies offering internship programs in robotics and automationEmployed by robotics firms, tech companies, and research institutions

The main difference is that a Co Op Robotics Software Engineer is typically a student or intern gaining practical experience, while a Robotics Software Engineer is a full-time professional responsible for developing and maintaining robotics software. The roles overlap in skills and industry but differ mainly in experience level and employment status.

Join a team of passionate thinkers, innovators, and dreamers - and help us connect people and build communities to create economic opportunity for all.

About the team and role:

Roca builds automated sorting systems for the trading card community. The team helps local game stores, hobby shops, collectors, and high-volume sellers identify, organize, and process cards more efficiently through a combination of robotics, software, and deep connection to the hobby they love!

As part of TCGplayer, an eBay company, Roca connects the physical world of collectibles to the digital marketplace. We are looking for a Senior Software Engineer, Team Lead to join the Roca Software team and help lead the systems behind that experience, including software running on connected devices, backend services, REST APIs, cloud integrations, internal tools, deployment tooling, and support systems.

You will join a small, collaborative engineering team at an important stage of growth. As the installed fleet expands, this role will help bring structure to complex problems, improve code quality, guide architecture discussions, mentor engineers, and modernize systems that must remain reliable in the field. You will work closely with hardware, firmware, computer vision, cloud engineering, product, support, and Scan and Identify teams to deliver a connected experience across the Roca ecosystem.

This is a hybrid role based in Longmont, Colorado, with regular in-office collaboration expected.

What you will accomplish:
  • Build and maintain software for Roca's robotic sorting systems, balancing new development with improvements to existing products
  • Lead technical design for software running on robotic devices and connecting to REST APIs, cloud services, IoT infrastructure, internal tools, and support workflows
  • Guide design decisions, engineering standards, and execution across the software team
  • Make architecture decisions across system boundaries, data flow, reliability, testing, deployment, observability, and maintainability
  • Raise code quality through strong reviews, clear standards, maintainable patterns, and testable design
  • Mentor engineers through design discussions, code reviews, debugging, pairing, and day-to-day problem solving
  • Improve legacy systems through incremental modernization while continuing to support stable products in the field
  • Partner with hardware, firmware, computer vision, cloud engineering, product, support, and Scan and Identify teams to deliver connected product experiences
  • Strengthen software development lifecycle practices, including planning, estimation, delivery, and continuous improvement
  • Communicate progress, risks, tradeoffs, and delivery expectations to technical and non-technical stakeholders
What you will bring:
  • 8+ years of professional software engineering experience building and maintaining production software
  • Experience leading technical direction through mentoring, architecture input, design reviews, delivery planning, or team-level decision making
  • Strong experience building applications in a modern object-oriented or modular programming language such as Java, C#, C++, Python, Go, or similar
  • Experience designing, building, hosting, or consuming REST APIs
  • Working knowledge of SQL or relational databases, including data modeling and access pattern tradeoffs
  • A code review approach that improves quality and helps engineers grow
  • Clear communication skills and the ability to work effectively with technical and non-technical partners
  • Strong judgment, curiosity, and comfort working across evolving systems and priorities
  • Helpful experience includes Go and/or Python, Linux, AWS, Docker, networking fundamentals, MQTT, IoT systems, observability, DevOps practices, embedded software environments, connected devices, distributed systems, robotics, automation systems, or Agile delivery practices
