BD Engineering Development Program

Program Overview

The BD Engineering Development Program (EDP) is designed to give new engineering graduates an opportunity to spend the first three years of their career rotating through three different BD businesses throughout the US. EDPs work side by side with R&D engineers on cross-functional teams to design, develop, and manufacture a wide range of medical devices, growing their BD network with each successive rotation. Following the completion of the program, EDP's progress into a full-time position in one of the BD R&D groups based on their interests and business needs.

Potential rotation locations include:

Vernon Hills, IL; Irvine, CA; Brea, CA; Salt Lake City, UT; Franklin Lakes, NJ; Warwick, RI; Tempe, AZ; Research Triangle Park, NC; Durham, NC; San Diego, CA; Covington, GA; Louisville, CO

Job Description

An EDP is a results-driven individual who continuously seeks to improve, presents a positive and professional demeanor, and is willing to learn about BD medical device instrumentation and applications.

A successful candidate will work under the supervision of an R&D manager and team to develop and maintain medical technology and devices. They work to design, develop, and test medical devices while following medical device regulations and quality processes. An EDP will also collaborate with stakeholders, analysts, scientists, and quality, regulatory, and marketing groups to understand patient and healthcare provider needs and realize them in new technology. Participation in design reviews, device testing, and providing regular status updates is expected.

Requirements

  • New engineering graduates with a BS or MS in Mechanical, Biomedical (Bioengineering), Materials, Electrical, Chemical, or related discipline

  • Expected Graduation date between August 2026 and June 2027

  • Excellent academic record

  • Relevant internship or co-op experience

  • Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills

  • Willingness to relocate annually during the three-year program

  • Must be legally authorized to work in the United States without restriction as to duration.

Desirable Skills and Knowledge

  • Critical decision maker using basic engineering principles

  • Leads teams and participates in cross-functional projects

  • Results and goal-oriented

  • Develops innovative ideas for the organization

  • Maintains a professional working relationship with internal & external customers and support staff

  • Provides technical support on components, material methods, systems, processes, and/or equipment

  • Experience writing technical protocols and reports

  • Specific specialized engineering skills such as basic engineering cost analysis and CAD knowledge

  • Proficient in basic principles for product design & prototyping using Material Science, Mechanical Engineering, and/or Bioengineering principles

  • Demonstrated comprehension of basic comparative statistics
