How does a CNS ATM Systems Engineer typically collaborate with other aviation professionals during system integration projects?

As a CNS ATM Systems Engineer, you will frequently collaborate with air traffic controllers, software developers, project managers, and regulatory authorities to ensure that communication, navigation, and surveillance (CNS) systems are seamlessly integrated into air traffic management (ATM) environments. This often involves participating in cross-functional meetings, conducting system compatibility assessments, and coordinating testing procedures. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as the successful integration of CNS ATM systems depends on aligning technical specifications with operational requirements and regulatory standards.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CNS ATM Systems Engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CNS ATM Systems Engineer, you need a solid background in telecommunications, avionics, and air traffic management systems, typically supported by a degree in electrical engineering, computer science, or a related field. Familiarity with industry-standard tools, protocols (such as ICAO standards), and certifications like CCNA or PMP is often required. Strong analytical thinking, problem-solving abilities, and effective communication are critical soft skills in this role. These competencies ensure the safe, efficient design and integration of complex communication, navigation, and surveillance systems crucial for modern air traffic management.

What are CNS ATM Systems Engineers?

CNS ATM Systems Engineers are specialized professionals who design, implement, and maintain Communication, Navigation, and Surveillance (CNS) systems that support Air Traffic Management (ATM). They ensure that the technology infrastructure for air traffic control operates safely, efficiently, and in line with international standards. Their work often involves integrating new technologies, troubleshooting system issues, and working with regulatory agencies to ensure compliance. CNS ATM Systems Engineers play a key role in modernizing airspace and enhancing the safety and capacity of air traffic operations.

The successful candidate will support cross-functional teams to develop system level architecture and requirements to influence Missile Defense Agency (MDA) incremental capability. The candidate will use Model Based Systems Engineering (MBSE) to evaluate architectural impacts through functional and behavior analysis for the defeat of conventional and advanced Threats (i.e., ballistic, aero-maneuvering, hypersonic, hyper-glide, countermeasures, etc.) systems within the (MDA) mission areas. The Systems Engineer will collaborate in an MBSE environment to develop system-of-systems requirements via system/component trade studies and analysis, and lead the development of Change Notices (CNs) to MDA's system specification to include functional, interface and performance requirements, architectural models, interface definitions, and support Trace verifcation from System to Element level requirements. The Systems Engineer will develop and deliver products (i.e., technical briefings, CNs) to support internal and MDA stakeholder reviews.
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • The Systems Engineer should demonstrate a technical background in architecture development, functional decomposition and/or allocation of requirements (performance, functional and interface definition) with system-modelling tools.
  • Candidate should have prior experience with use of MSOSA (Cameo), DOORS and/or demonstrated knowledge in any of the MDA domain areas; including Aegis Weapon System, Ground-based Midcourse Defense (GMD), Glide Phase Intercept (GPI), Hypersonic and Ballistic Tracking Space Sensor (HBTSS), Fire Control, C2BMC, MDS sensors (EO/IR/RF).
  • The successful candidate must demonstrate the ability to think critically and capture concepts in papers, presentations, and discussions.
