What is a CNC operator?

CNC operators are skilled professionals who set up, operate, and maintain computer numerical control (CNC) machines used to manufacture precision parts and products. They interpret technical drawings, load materials, monitor the machining process, and make adjustments to ensure quality and efficiency. CNC operators also perform routine maintenance, troubleshoot issues, and may be responsible for quality control checks to ensure finished products meet specifications.

What skills and qualifications are needed to thrive as a CNC machinist?

To thrive as a CNC Machinist, you need strong mechanical aptitude, precision measurement skills, and a background in manufacturing or machining, often supported by a technical diploma or apprenticeship. Familiarity with CAD/CAM software, G-code programming, and CNC machine operation is essential, and certifications such as NIMS can be advantageous. Attention to detail, problem-solving ability, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for quality control and teamwork. These competencies ensure accurate production, machine safety, and efficient workflow in demanding manufacturing environments.

What challenges do CNC operators face when working with new materials or complex designs?

CNC operators often encounter challenges when working with unfamiliar materials or intricate design specifications, such as selecting the correct tooling, adjusting machine parameters, and ensuring precise tolerances. These challenges require close attention to programming details, frequent quality checks, and effective collaboration with engineers or designers. Staying updated on the latest machining techniques and proactively communicating with team members help operators overcome these obstacles and maintain production efficiency.

Job Title: CNC MachinistJob Description

Join a specialized machine shop that produces custom automation systems and precision components. As a CNC Machinist, you will machine weldments and small, complex parts, primarily using 4- and 5-axis equipment. You will work from engineering drawings and blueprints to produce mostly unique, low-volume parts, focusing on first-off and small production runs. You will operate CNC mills, lathes, and routers, using Fanuc and Hurco controllers, with programming done in Mastercam and at the machine in G and M code.

Responsibilities
  • Machine weldments and small, complex parts using CNC mills, lathes, and routers.
  • Operate primarily 4- and 5-axis machines, including universal head machining for weldments.
  • Use existing CNC programs where available and create or modify programs in G and M code when needed for yourself and others.
  • Program and set up CNC machines using Mastercam and at the control to run first-off and small production jobs.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, charts, and tables to determine machining requirements.
  • Set up and adjust production machinery, including tooling, offsets, and workholding, to ensure accurate and efficient operations.
  • Select appropriate tools and establish offsets for each job to achieve required tolerances and surface finishes.
  • Perform first-off inspections, make necessary offsets, and verify part dimensions throughout the machining process.
  • Work with Fanuc and Hurco controllers to operate and troubleshoot CNC equipment.
  • Ensure scheduled milestones and production timelines are met by planning setups and machining operations effectively.
  • Collaborate and communicate with team members, participating in group meetings and sharing technical input when required.
  • Work safely and maintain a clean, organized work area in the machine shop environment.
  • Demonstrate self-motivation and the ability to work with minimal supervision while meeting quality and productivity expectations.
Essential Skills
  • Certificate of Qualification as a Machinist OR at least 5+ years of experience as a CNC Machinist working with mills and lathes.
  • Hands-on experience with CNC milling and turning operations, including setup and operation of mills and lathes.
  • Proven experience with first-off production, offsets, and tool selection for precision machining.
  • Ability to program CNC machines in G code and M code for mill and lathe operations.
  • Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, charts, and tables.
  • Experience operating computer numerically controlled (CNC) mill, lathe, and router equipment.
  • Skill in setting up and adjusting production machinery for different jobs and materials.
  • Knowledge and practical experience with Fanuc and Hurco controllers.
  • Strong oral communication skills and ability to work effectively with others.
  • Self-motivation and ability to work with minimal supervision while maintaining high standards.
  • Ability to work in a team environment and actively participate in group meetings safely.
  • Capability to ensure scheduled milestones are met through effective planning and execution of machining tasks.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
  • Experience machining weldments and complex, low-volume parts.
  • Familiarity with 4- and 5-axis CNC machining, including 3+2 configurations.
  • Experience with universal head machining for weldments.
  • Programming experience using Mastercam for CNC machining operations.
  • Comfort working on unique parts, first-offs, and small production runs.
  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and different part designs in a custom automation environment.
Why Work Here?

You will join a well-established, multi-location operation with a dedicated machine shop that supports advanced automation projects, offering stability and ongoing technical challenges.
