CNC Lathe Machinist


Position Summary

Prototool LLC is seeking an experienced CNC Lathe Machinist who can independently manage all aspects of precision machining from blueprint to finished part. This is not an operator position—it is a skilled manufacturing role requiring the ability to program, set up, machine, inspect, and troubleshoot a wide variety of prototype, tooling, repair, and production components while maintaining the highest standards of quality and efficiency.


Responsibilities

  • Interpret engineering drawings, CAD models, specifications, and customer requirements.
  • Develop machining processes and determine the most efficient manufacturing method.
  • Create and edit CNC programs using conversational controls and/or CAM software.
  • Select tooling, workholding, and cutting parameters appropriate for each job.
  • Perform complete machine setups including fixturing, tooling, offsets, and first-piece verification.
  • Run production while monitoring tool wear, surface finish, and dimensional accuracy.
  • Inspect completed parts using precision measuring equipment including micrometers, calipers, bore gauges, thread gauges, height gauges, and indicators.
  • Perform first article, in-process, and final inspections to ensure parts meet print specifications.
  • Troubleshoot machining, tooling, programming, and dimensional issues with minimal supervision.
  • Optimize cycle times while maintaining part quality and tool life.
  • Maintain accurate job documentation and inspection records.
  • Perform routine machine maintenance and keep equipment and work areas clean and organized.
  • Collaborate with management and coworkers to solve manufacturing challenges and improve processes.
  • Assist with training less experienced machinists when needed.


Qualifications

  • Minimum 5 years of CNC lathe setup experience preferred.
  • Ability to independently program, set up, and run CNC lathes.
  • Strong understanding of G-code programming and machining principles.
  • Ability to read complex mechanical drawings and understand GD&T.
  • Proficient using precision inspection equipment.
  • Knowledge of tooling, workholding, feeds, speeds, and cutting tool selection.
  • Ability to machine a variety of materials including aluminum, steel, stainless steel, brass, bronze, plastics, and exotic alloys.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple jobs in a fast-paced job shop environment.


Preferred Skills

  • Experience with prototype and low-volume manufacturing.
  • CAM programming experience.
  • Experience with repair work, tooling, and fixtures. \


Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for extended periods.
  • Frequently lift up to 50 pounds.
  • Ability to bend, reach, and work around machine tools safely.
  • Manual dexterity necessary for precision machining and inspection.
