Cnc Threading information

What is CNC threading?

CNC threading is a machining process in which threads are cut or formed on a workpiece using a Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machine. This process ensures high precision and repeatability, allowing for the creation of threads on materials such as metal or plastic according to exact specifications. CNC threading is commonly used in industries like automotive, aerospace, and manufacturing for producing threaded parts such as bolts, screws, and pipes. The process can accommodate various thread types, including internal and external threads, and is suitable for both small and large production runs.

What is the difference between Cnc Threading vs Cnc Milling?

AspectCnc ThreadingCnc Milling
Primary FunctionCreating threaded parts and screw threadsCutting and shaping various parts with multiple axes
Tools UsedThreading tools, taps, diesEnd mills, face mills, drills
Work EnvironmentPrecision machining, small to medium partsVersatile manufacturing, complex parts
CertificationsMachining certifications, CNC operationMachining certifications, CNC operation

While both Cnc Threading and Cnc Milling involve CNC machine operation and require similar certifications, Cnc Threading specializes in creating screw threads and threaded components, whereas Cnc Milling focuses on shaping a variety of parts with multiple axes. Understanding these differences helps in choosing the right skill set for specific manufacturing tasks.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CNC Threading Operator, and why are they important?

To excel as a CNC Threading Operator, you need a solid understanding of machining principles, blueprint reading, and experience with CNC machine operation, often supported by vocational training or certifications. Familiarity with CAD/CAM software, G-code programming, and precision measurement tools is typically required. Attention to detail, problem-solving abilities, and strong communication skills help ensure quality and efficiency. These competencies are crucial for producing accurate threaded parts, maintaining safety standards, and minimizing production errors.

How does a CNC Threading operator typically collaborate with engineers and quality control teams on a daily basis?

As a CNC Threading operator, you will regularly communicate with engineers to interpret technical drawings and ensure correct threading specifications. Collaboration with quality control teams is essential, as they rely on you to provide accurate measurements and report any deviations from standards. This teamwork helps maintain product quality and minimize production errors, making strong communication skills and attention to detail valuable assets in this role.

Why This Role Exists

This role exists because Freeform is scaling advanced manufacturing into true production.

Freeform is moving beyond R&D into high-volume, vertically integrated production of complex metal parts for aerospace, defense, and advanced industrial customers. To do that, the company needs manufacturing engineers who deeply understand CNC machining, programming, and process optimization โ€” not just theory.

As a Senior Manufacturing Engineer (CNC Machining), youโ€™ll be responsible for building the machining standards, programs, and workflows that allow autonomous metal printing and precision CNC machining to scale together.

---

The Work Youโ€™ll Be Doing

In this role, you will:

  • Develop, implement, and optimize CNC programs for complex metal components
  • Program, set up, and refine machining operations on DMG Mori and Haas 5-axis CNC machines
  • Translate CAD models and GD&T drawings into efficient, repeatable machining strategies
  • Select and optimize tooling, speeds, feeds, and cutting strategies for throughput and quality
  • Troubleshoot machining issues and work hands-on with machinists to resolve them
  • Maintain CNC program libraries, documentation, and standardized best practices
  • Drive process improvements to reduce cycle times and increase machine utilization
  • Provide hands-on technical support and training on the shop floor
  • Ensure compliance with quality, inspection, and safety standards

This is a floor-focused manufacturing engineering role, not a desk-only position.

---

Machines, Controls & Software

Youโ€™ll work with equipment such as:

Machines:

  • DMG Mori 5-Axis CNC Machining Centers
  • Haas Multi-Axis CNC Mills

Controls:

  • Siemens

CAM Software:

  • Mastercam

Inspection Tools:

  • CMMs (as applicable)
  • Micrometers, thread gauges, indicators
  • On-machine probing systems

---

What Weโ€™re Looking For

Required:

  • Bachelorโ€™s degree in an engineering discipline (or equivalent experience)
  • 5+ years of 5-axis CNC programming and machining experience
  • Strong expertise with Mastercam
  • Hands-on experience with DMG Mori 5-axis machines
  • Proven ability machining aluminum, stainless steel, titanium, or Inconel
  • Strong problem-solving mindset and collaborative approach

Preferred (Not Required):

  • NTMA machinist certification or equivalent training
  • Experience with Siemens controls
  • Experience machining metal 3D printed parts
  • Experience machining castings or forgings
  • Familiarity with CMMs, GD&T, and inspection planning
  • Comfortable operating shop equipment (cranes, forklifts, power tools)

---

Materials Youโ€™ll Work With

  • Aluminum
  • Stainless Steel
  • Titanium
  • Inconel & nickel-based alloys

---

People choose Freeform because:

  • Engineering decisions are grounded in real machining
  • Modern 5-axis CNC equipment and advanced automation
  • Tight collaboration between engineers, machinists, and programmers
  • High-impact work that directly influences production scale
  • Competitive compensation plus equity ownership
  • Clean, organized, state-of-the-art facility
  • A culture focused on learning, ownership, and execution

This role is ideal for engineers who still care deeply about the cut.

---
