What is a CNC Robotics professional?

CNC Robotics refers to the integration of Computer Numerical Control (CNC) technology with robotic systems to automate manufacturing processes. These robots are programmed to perform precise tasks such as cutting, milling, drilling, and assembling, often in industries like automotive, aerospace, and metalworking. By combining robotics with CNC programming, manufacturers achieve higher efficiency, accuracy, and repeatability in production. CNC robots can work continuously with minimal human intervention, leading to increased productivity and reduced operational costs.

How do CNC Robotics professionals typically collaborate with engineers and production teams on complex projects?

CNC Robotics professionals frequently work closely with engineers and production teams to ensure that robotic machining processes align with project specifications and production goals. They participate in project meetings, provide technical feedback on design feasibility, and help troubleshoot issues that arise during integration or operation. Effective communication and teamwork are essential, as CNC Robotics specialists often bridge the gap between design concepts and practical manufacturing solutions, ensuring that automation enhances overall workflow efficiency.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CNC Robotics technician, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CNC Robotics Technician, you need technical knowledge in robotics, CNC programming, mechanical systems, and often a relevant associate degree or technical certification. Familiarity with CAD/CAM software, PLC programming, and industrial robotics platforms like FANUC or ABB is typically required. Strong problem-solving abilities, attention to detail, and effective teamwork set top performers apart in this role. These skills ensure precise automation, minimize downtime, and maintain efficient manufacturing operations.

Job description

Step into a day on our automation floor

You arrive to a humming cell and bring it to peak performance. You verify paths on a Nachi or Yaskawa Motoman arm, confirm part pick/place alignment to the CNC chuck, and run a short test cycle on the welding fixture. A small offset tweak, a sensor calibration, and production is ready to roll.

What you will do
  • Install, program, and fine‑tune machine‑tending robots so parts load/unload precisely into CNC machines and robotic welding equipment.
  • Continuously monitor automation performance and make adjustments to improve reliability, throughput, and part quality.
  • Troubleshoot robots, controllers, I/O, and peripheral equipment to minimize downtime.
  • Set up, calibrate, and test robotic arms, end‑of‑arm tooling, and sensors.
  • Perform regular preventive and predictive maintenance on robotic and control systems.
  • Use metrology tools (calipers, gauges) to verify processes; document and report any process variation or quality concern.
  • Interpret technical drawings and follow established procedures with precision.
  • Train and assist teammates, fostering a collaborative, safety‑first culture.
  • Maintain housekeeping and follow environmental guidelines; always wear appropriate PPE.
Tools and platforms you will encounter

NACHI, Yaskawa Motoman, FANUC, and OTC Daihen robots; CNC machine interfaces; welding cells; assembly fixtures; CAD/CAM; MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

What you bring
  • 3+ years working hands‑on with robotic systems such as FANUC, OTC Daihen, Nachi, and Yaskawa Motoman.
  • Proficiency programming multi‑axis material‑handling and tending applications.
  • Strong troubleshooting across mechanical and electrical disciplines.
  • Experience with CAD/CAM; knowledge of hydraulic, pneumatic, and electrical control systems is a plus.
  • Clear written and verbal communication; detail orientation; able to work independently and in teams.
  • Willingness to work overtime, including weekends and call‑ins when needed.
  • Technical diploma or associate degree in robotics or automation.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, prints, and check sheets.
  • Time management and a sense of urgency; able to navigate unexpected challenges and drive rapid solutions.
  • Firm understanding of safety procedures and regulations, including MIOSHA and other governmental standards; comfortable in a manufacturing environment.
Physical demands
  • Sitting, squatting, walking, and bending for 8–10 hours per day.
  • Lift 50 lbs. or more as needed.
  • Work in varying weather conditions; exposure to a production environment.
Where you will work
  • CNC machining, robotic welding, and assembly shop environments.
  • Standard and special‑purpose equipment including automation, CNC machines, welding robots, assembly fixtures, and tools.
  • Automated production cells are a frequent setting.
Safety
  • Wear required Personal Protective Equipment in all production areas.
  • Follow company safety protocols and MIOSHA regulations at all times.
