What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CNC programmer?

To thrive as a CNC Programmer, you need strong mathematical aptitude, mechanical understanding, and experience with blueprint reading, often supported by a degree or certification in manufacturing technology or a related field. Familiarity with CAD/CAM software, G-code programming, and CNC machine operation is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for optimizing processes and minimizing errors. These skills ensure efficient production, high-quality output, and smooth collaboration with engineering and production teams.

How much do CNC programmers earn?

CNC programmers typically earn between $45,000 and $75,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Skilled programmers with certifications and proficiency in CAD/CAM software can earn higher salaries, especially in manufacturing environments with complex machinery.

Are CNC programmers in demand?

CNC programmers are in steady demand due to their essential role in manufacturing and precision machining. The need for skilled operators with knowledge of CAD/CAM software and machine operation continues to grow as industries seek efficient and accurate production processes.

What is CNC programming?

CNC programming involves creating detailed instructions that guide computer numerical control (CNC) machines in the manufacturing of parts and products. CNC programmers use specialized software to convert design blueprints into precise code, which tells machines how to move, cut, and shape materials. This process ensures high accuracy, repeatability, and efficiency in manufacturing. CNC programming is essential in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and metal fabrication.

What are some common challenges CNC programmers face when transitioning from manual machining to automated CNC environments?

CNC Programmers often find that moving from manual machining to CNC environments requires adapting to new software, precision expectations, and troubleshooting skills. Unlike manual machining, CNC programming involves understanding G-code, machine-specific software, and simulation tools, as well as resolving issues related to tool paths and machine errors. Collaboration with machinists and engineers becomes more critical to ensure that the programmed designs are both manufacturable and efficient. Staying updated with evolving technology and continuous learning are essential for a smooth transition and long-term success.

What is the difference between Cnc Programming vs Cnc Machinist?

AspectCnc Programming

Cnc Programming involves writing and editing code to control CNC machines, focusing on creating precise instructions for manufacturing parts. Cnc Machinists operate CNC machines, set up equipment, and manually adjust tools to produce parts based on the programs. Both roles require knowledge of CNC operations, often share certifications like CNC operator licenses, and work in manufacturing environments. While Cnc Programmers focus on coding and software, Cnc Machinists handle machine operation and adjustments. They often collaborate, with programmers providing instructions for machinists to execute.

Job description

About Torus
Torus is headquartered in Utah and is expanding manufacturing at our 540,000-square-foot facility in Salt Lake City called GigaOne. Our mission is to build the world's first mesh energy infrastructure - built to unite people and communities through resilient, secure, and intelligent power. We design, engineer, manufacture, install, and support our systems end-to-end, standing behind them throughout their lifecycle. Torus systems help reduce costs, lower emissions, and protect facilities from outages, while strengthening the security and reliability of the broader utility grid. Torus is committed to American manufacturing, engineering excellence, and building energy systems that last.
At Torus, you will be part of something larger than a single product or technology. Your work will help build energy infrastructure that supports critical systems, industry, and communities for decades to come. We value accountability, collaboration, and clear thinking. We are looking for people who want to solve hard problems and build things that matter.
About the Role
As a CNC Waterjet Technician at Torus, you will be a critical link in our advanced manufacturing process. You aren't just operating a machine; you are responsible for the precision fabrication of components that power our large-scale energy storage systems. This role requires a blend of technical expertise in CNC operation and a "builder's mindset." You will work closely with our engineering and production teams to transform raw materials into high-performance parts, ensuring that every cut meets our rigorous standards for quality and efficiency.
Responsibilities
  • Set up and operate CNC water jet cutting machines, including loading and securing raw material, calibrating cutting heads, and adjusting water pressure and abrasive flow rates.
  • Import, translate, and nest CAD/CAM files (DXF, DWG, or similar) into the machine control software to optimize material yield and cutting efficiency.
  • Select and install appropriate cutting nozzles, and abrasive media based on material type and thickness.
  • Review engineering drawings, work orders, and specifications to determine cutting sequences, tolerances, and production priorities.
  • Identify and correct deviations in cut quality - including taper, surface roughness, or dimensional drift - by adjusting machine parameters.
  • Can accurately trouble shoot G-code and various other tooling languages associated with program set up
  • Accurately record production data including part quantities, run times, material usage, and machine downtime in the shop management system (ERP/MES)

Required Experience
  • High school diploma or GED; technical or vocational training in machining, manufacturing, or a related field preferred.
  • 1-3 years of experience operating CNC water jet, laser, or plasma cutting equipment
  • Basic computer skills; experience with CAM or machine control software a plus.

Preferred Experience
  • Familiarity with a variety of materials including aluminum, stainless steel, titanium, or composites.
  • Knowledge of lean manufacturing and 5S principles.

You'll be a great fit at Torus if you're motivated by building durable systems and taking responsibility for how they perform in the field. This role is well-suited for a CNC Waterjet Technician who enjoys the challenge of transforming complex designs into high-precision parts, collaborating closely with engineering and assembly teams, and solving practical fabrication problems that directly impact product reliability. If you take pride in technical accuracy, maintaining a world-class shop environment, and seeing your work move from a raw sheet of material to a deployed energy solution, you'll find meaningful long-term impact here.
Our Perks & Benefits
  • Employee Rewards Package including equity
  • 401(k) Retirement Savings Plan
  • Health Benefits Package: Choice between traditional PPO or HSA eligible medical plans; Dental insurance; and Vision insurance
