How much do cnc programming jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 18, 2026, the average hourly pay for cnc programming in Modesto, CA is $32.66, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $26.88 and $36.78 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What is CNC programming?

CNC programming involves creating detailed instructions that guide computer numerical control (CNC) machines in the manufacturing of parts and products. CNC programmers use specialized software to convert design blueprints into precise code, which tells machines how to move, cut, and shape materials. This process ensures high accuracy, repeatability, and efficiency in manufacturing. CNC programming is essential in industries such as automotive, aerospace, and metal fabrication.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CNC programmer?

To thrive as a CNC Programmer, you need strong mathematical aptitude, mechanical understanding, and experience with blueprint reading, often supported by a degree or certification in manufacturing technology or a related field. Familiarity with CAD/CAM software, G-code programming, and CNC machine operation is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication are crucial soft skills for optimizing processes and minimizing errors. These skills ensure efficient production, high-quality output, and smooth collaboration with engineering and production teams.

What are some common challenges CNC programmers face when transitioning from manual machining to automated CNC environments?

CNC Programmers often find that moving from manual machining to CNC environments requires adapting to new software, precision expectations, and troubleshooting skills. Unlike manual machining, CNC programming involves understanding G-code, machine-specific software, and simulation tools, as well as resolving issues related to tool paths and machine errors. Collaboration with machinists and engineers becomes more critical to ensure that the programmed designs are both manufacturable and efficient. Staying updated with evolving technology and continuous learning are essential for a smooth transition and long-term success.

What is the difference between Cnc Programming vs Cnc Machinist?

AspectCnc Programming

Cnc Programming involves writing and editing code to control CNC machines, focusing on creating precise instructions for manufacturing parts. Cnc Machinists operate CNC machines, set up equipment, and manually adjust tools to produce parts based on the programs. Both roles require knowledge of CNC operations, often share certifications like CNC operator licenses, and work in manufacturing environments. While Cnc Programmers focus on coding and software, Cnc Machinists handle machine operation and adjustments. They often collaborate, with programmers providing instructions for machinists to execute.

Are CNC programmers in demand?

CNC programmers are in demand due to the ongoing need for precision manufacturing in industries such as aerospace, automotive, and medical devices. Skilled programmers who can operate CAD/CAM software and work with CNC machines are sought after, especially as automation increases in manufacturing environments.

How much do CNC programmers earn?

CNC programmers typically earn between $50,000 and $80,000 annually, depending on experience, location, and industry. Skilled programmers with certifications and proficiency in CAD/CAM software can earn higher salaries, especially in manufacturing environments with complex machinery.

Job description

Description
ABOUT APPLIED AEROSPACE:
Join the team that builds for the best. At Applied Aerospace, we design, fabricate, and test mission-critical aerospace components for leading innovators like SpaceX, NASA, Northrop Grumman, and Boeing. Every part we create reflects our relentless commitment to quality, reliability, and performance. Through precision engineering and purpose-driven innovation, we're helping take aerospace technology to new heights - and we're looking for talented individuals who want to be part of that journey.
OVERVIEW OF POSITION:
We are seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Entry-Level CNC Programmer with a Certificate in Mastercam to join our dynamic manufacturing team. This is an excellent opportunity for a recent graduate or individual with foundational CNC programming knowledge to launch their career and grow within a supportive environment. The successful candidate will be responsible for creating, modifying, and optimizing CNC programs to produce precision parts according to engineering specifications.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Develop and write CNC programs using Mastercam software for various machining operations (milling, turning, etc.) on multi-axis CNC machines.
  • Interpret engineering drawings and 3D models to determine machining requirements and optimal tool paths.
  • Select appropriate cutting tools, fixtures, and machining parameters for different materials and geometries.
  • Simulate and verify CNC programs to detect and correct potential errors, collisions, or inefficiencies before actual machining.
  • Collaborate with machinists, engineers, and production staff to troubleshoot issues, optimize processes, and improve part quality and production efficiency.
  • Perform basic machine setup and operation for program testing and validation.
  • Document program changes, setup sheets, and operational procedures.

GENERAL:
  • Required: 2 year of CNC Programming experience or an CNC Programming certificate from an accredited academic institution.
  • Strong understanding of G-code and M-code programming.
  • Ability to interpret engineering drawings featuring GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing).
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and lift up to [e.g., 30-50] pounds.
  • Ability to work in a manufacturing environment with exposure to noise and machinery.

This job description is not intended to be all-inclusive. Employees may perform other related duties as assigned to meet the ongoing needs of the Company.
