What is a CNC programming manager?

A CNC Programming Manager is a professional responsible for overseeing the programming and operation of Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines in a manufacturing setting. They lead a team of CNC programmers and machinists, ensuring that all machine programs are optimized for efficiency, safety, and quality. Their duties often include managing workflow, troubleshooting technical issues, developing process improvements, and coordinating with other departments. A strong technical background in CNC machining, leadership skills, and experience with CAD/CAM software are typically required for this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CNC programming manager?

To thrive as a CNC Programming Manager, you need advanced knowledge of CNC machining, programming (often in G-code), manufacturing processes, and typically a background in engineering or a related technical field. Familiarity with CAD/CAM software like Mastercam or SolidWorks, ERP systems, and experience with quality control certifications such as Six Sigma are commonly required. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills are essential for managing teams and optimizing workflows. These skills ensure efficient production, high-quality output, and effective management of both people and processes in a manufacturing environment.

What are some common challenges a CNC programming manager faces when overseeing a team of programmers?

A CNC Programming Manager often navigates challenges such as ensuring consistency and accuracy in programming across different team members, managing tight production deadlines, and keeping up with rapidly evolving CNC technologies. Balancing the workload among programmers and facilitating effective communication with machinists, engineers, and production staff are also key aspects of the role. Additionally, the manager is responsible for ongoing training and development to maintain high standards and optimize machine utilization, all while troubleshooting programming or machining issues that arise during production.

What is the difference between Cnc Programming Manager vs Cnc Programmer?

AspectCnc Programming ManagerCnc Programmer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in manufacturing, engineering, or related field; certifications like NIMS or CAM certifications are commonOften requires similar technical certifications or training in CNC programming and machine operation
Work EnvironmentOversees multiple projects, manages teams, and collaborates with engineering and production departmentsFocuses on writing, testing, and optimizing CNC programs for specific machines and parts
Industry UsageUsed across manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, and industrial sectorsPrimarily found in manufacturing and machine shop environments

The main difference is that the Cnc Programming Manager oversees the programming team and strategic planning, while the Cnc Programmer focuses on creating and testing CNC programs for specific tasks. Both roles require technical skills, but the manager has additional responsibilities in leadership and project coordination.

Job description

Delem-Controlled CNC Press Brake Programming Specialist

Location: Indian Trail, NC

Schedule: Monday–Friday | 7:00 AM – 4:00 PM

Pay: $22–$28/hour DOE (Higher compensation may be considered for highly qualified candidates)

A Day in the Shop

You arrive, power up the KAAST press brake, and load today’s jobs. With Delem/Dellum controls at your fingertips, you translate blueprints into bend sequences, dial in crowning and deflection compensation, and fine-tune parameters on the fly. Before each forming run, you head to the CNC shear to prepare material to spec. As production ramps, you’re the go-to expert—troubleshooting, optimizing, and mentoring teammates—while keeping scrap low and quality high.

What You’ll Own
  • Set up, program, and operate KAAST CNC press brakes to produce precise sheet metal components.
  • Run CNC shear operations to prepare materials ahead of forming.
  • Program directly at the machine using Delem, Delem 51T, or Dellum controllers—no reliance on office-generated code.
  • Interpret blueprints, fabrication drawings, work orders, and specifications to plan tooling and bend sequences.
  • Select tooling, calculate bend allowances, and define machine settings and inputs (material type, thickness, dimensions, angles, leg sizes).
  • Troubleshoot machine, tooling, and quality issues; adjust calibration, crowning, and deflection to maintain accuracy.
  • Inspect finished parts to verify dimensional and quality requirements.
  • Perform basic preventive maintenance and daily equipment checks.
  • Handle and stage materials safely throughout fabrication.
  • Collaborate with project managers, estimators, and production leadership to hit accuracy and throughput targets.
  • Develop best practices and support continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Mentor and train junior operators; serve as the subject matter expert on Delem-controlled brake systems.
What It TakesRequired
  • 3+ years in CNC press brake setup, programming, and operation.
  • Proven experience programming at the controller.
  • Hands-on background with Delem, Delem 51T, or Dellum controls (strongly preferred).
  • Operational experience with both CNC press brakes and shears.
  • Deep knowledge of tooling selection, bend calculations, and forming processes.
  • Ability to independently diagnose issues and make machine adjustments.
  • Working knowledge of calibration, crowning, and deflection compensation.
  • Fluency in reading/understanding blueprints and fabrication drawings.
  • Strong fabrication math and precise measurement skills.
  • Self-directed work style with high attention to detail and quality.
Preferred
  • Experience with KAAST machinery.
  • Background working with aluminum, sheet metal, or architectural metals.
  • Broader CNC programming experience.
  • Lean manufacturing/process improvement exposure.
  • Forklift operation.
  • Bilingual (English/Spanish).
Physical Demands
  • Stand for extended periods.
  • Frequently lift and move up to 50 lbs.
  • Comfort working in hot, cold, noisy, or dusty manufacturing settings.
  • Safely guide and handle large sheet metal components.
What Success Looks Like
  • Independently programs and runs both the CNC shear and press brake.
  • Delivers accurate parts with minimal scrap.
  • Quickly isolates root causes and resolves machine/quality issues.
  • Functions as the team’s Delem controls expert.
  • Drives measurable improvements in quality, efficiency, and process.
  • Coaches teammates and elevates overall capability.
Why You’ll Like Working Here
  • Competitive pay based on experience.
  • 90-day performance review with potential pay increase.
  • Health benefits and 401(k).
  • Paid holidays and vacation.
  • Long-term career growth opportunities.
  • Modern fabrication equipment.
  • Collaborative team that values expertise and continuous improvement.

Are you the precision-minded press brake expert who thrives on solving fabrication challenges and raising the bar for quality? We’d love to talk.
