What is a CNC programming manager?

A CNC Programming Manager is a professional responsible for overseeing the programming and operation of Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines in a manufacturing setting. They lead a team of CNC programmers and machinists, ensuring that all machine programs are optimized for efficiency, safety, and quality. Their duties often include managing workflow, troubleshooting technical issues, developing process improvements, and coordinating with other departments. A strong technical background in CNC machining, leadership skills, and experience with CAD/CAM software are typically required for this role.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CNC programming manager?

To thrive as a CNC Programming Manager, you need advanced knowledge of CNC machining, programming (often in G-code), manufacturing processes, and typically a background in engineering or a related technical field. Familiarity with CAD/CAM software like Mastercam or SolidWorks, ERP systems, and experience with quality control certifications such as Six Sigma are commonly required. Strong leadership, problem-solving, and communication skills are essential for managing teams and optimizing workflows. These skills ensure efficient production, high-quality output, and effective management of both people and processes in a manufacturing environment.

What are some common challenges a CNC programming manager faces when overseeing a team of programmers?

A CNC Programming Manager often navigates challenges such as ensuring consistency and accuracy in programming across different team members, managing tight production deadlines, and keeping up with rapidly evolving CNC technologies. Balancing the workload among programmers and facilitating effective communication with machinists, engineers, and production staff are also key aspects of the role. Additionally, the manager is responsible for ongoing training and development to maintain high standards and optimize machine utilization, all while troubleshooting programming or machining issues that arise during production.

What is the difference between Cnc Programming Manager vs Cnc Programmer?

AspectCnc Programming ManagerCnc Programmer
CredentialsTypically requires a degree in manufacturing, engineering, or related field; certifications like NIMS or CAM certifications are commonOften requires similar technical certifications or training in CNC programming and machine operation
Work EnvironmentOversees multiple projects, manages teams, and collaborates with engineering and production departmentsFocuses on writing, testing, and optimizing CNC programs for specific machines and parts
Industry UsageUsed across manufacturing, aerospace, automotive, and industrial sectorsPrimarily found in manufacturing and machine shop environments

The main difference is that the Cnc Programming Manager oversees the programming team and strategic planning, while the Cnc Programmer focuses on creating and testing CNC programs for specific tasks. Both roles require technical skills, but the manager has additional responsibilities in leadership and project coordination.

Job description

Job Description About the Role Pinnacle Partners is recruiting for a CNC Machinist - Swiss Lathe Machinist on behalf of a client in Lexington, Kentucky. We are seeking an experienced precision machinist to set up and operate Swiss CNC lathes while producing components to tight tolerances. This is a hands-on machining position focused on CNC setup, machine-side G-code adjustments, precision measurement, troubleshooting, and maintaining quality throughout production runs.

Key Responsibilities: Set up and operate Swiss CNC lathes, with equipment most closely aligning with Citizen and Star Swiss machines. Machine precision components to tolerances down to .0001" while independently measuring and verifying parts. Perform CNC setups, including tooling, workholding, offsets, and machine preparation for production runs

Understand and make necessary G-code settings and adjustments at the machine. Read and interpret blueprints, work orders, sketches, dimensions, and tolerances to determine machining requirements. Use micrometers, calipers, gauges, and other precision measuring equipment to verify dimensional accuracy.

Perform first-article inspections and ongoing in-process inspections throughout production runs. Identify dimensional drift and make appropriate offsets, tooling changes, or machine adjustments to bring parts back into specification. Troubleshoot machining, tooling, setup, and quality problems.

Prepare tooling requirements according to setup instructions for each job. Efficiently operate multiple CNC machines while maintaining productivity and quality expectations. Cross-train within Quality Control and on other machines throughout the shop.

Requirements: 5+ years of CNC machining experience, ideally within Swiss or CNC Lathe/turning. Proven ability to machine and independently measure precision components to tolerances down to .0001". Experience measuring your own parts and taking ownership of dimensional accuracy

Strong proficiency with micrometers, calipers, gauges, and other precision measuring tools. Strong CNC setup experience, including tooling, workholding, offsets, and machine preparation. Understanding of G-code settings at the machine and ability to make edits, offsets, and adjustments.

Ability to read and interpret blueprints, dimensions, tolerances, and machining instructions. Ability to identify when a part is drifting out of tolerance and determine the appropriate machine, tooling, or offset adjustment. Strong mechanical aptitude and machining troubleshooting skills.

High School Diploma or equivalent. Comfortable working in a hands-on machine-shop environment. Preferred: 5+ years of direct Swiss machining experience.

Citizen or Star Swiss experience. Strong Swiss setup experience. Experience operating multiple CNC machines simultaneously.

Conversational programming experience. Vocational or technical machining education. Knowledge of technical math, including geometry and trigonometry.

Experience with ISO 9001 and/or AS9100 Quality Management Systems. Forklift or material-handling experience. Benefits Overview: Competitive pay of approximately $24-$32 per hour, depending on experience.

4-day, 10-hour work week. 1st shift schedule. Medical insurance.

Dental insurance. Vision insurance. Life insurance.

Short-Term Disability. Long-Term Disability. 401(k) with company match.

80 hours of PTO at the beginning of January. Additional 40 hours of PTO after 5 years. Paid Christmas shutdown.
