Job description

The CNC Engineer works under the direction of the Manufacturing Engineering Manager with minimum supervision. Is responsible for maintaining process integrity, product delivery and quality requirements, with a primary focus on CNC processes. This may include but not limited to; RCCA, PFMEA support, Manufacturing Instructions, CNC programming, implementation of process improvements, and daily involvement in production support.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
Will be responsible for CNC machine programming of assigned parts and tooling to include:
  • Design and develop robust CNC programs for 3 and 5 axis machining centers and routers utilizing CAM software
  • Providing well documented instructions
  • Analyze engineering drawings to determine the most efficient way to manufacture parts
  • Providing ongoing support of operators for new work run-off and troubleshooting existing processes
  • Will collaborate with project engineers and production teams on the selection of best fit methods for manufacture (e.g. routing fixture vs. CNC machining)
  • Perform quality control checks and troubleshoot issues during the machining process
  • Collaborate on capacity and capability enhancement by reducing setup times and improving fixtures for error proofing
  • Participation in continuous improvement activities in programming and CNC machine operations
  • Stay up to date with advancements in CNC technology and incorporate them into manufacturing processes
  • Responsible for selecting cutting tools, calculating speeds and feeds, and optimizing machining processes
  • Ensure that all safety standards are met during the manufacturing process

Design, develop and/or modify tooling, processes, and procedures to support manufacture of composite parts and assemblies including mold tools, drill fixtures, and assembly tools.
Modifications/improvements to tool design, tool fabrication and manufacturing documentation.
Creates CAD models, drawings, and work instructions meeting customer specifications and delivery commitments.
Maintain and improve company's competitive position by identifying, justifying, and implementing manufacturing improvements.
Prepare the technical portion of new business proposals working effectively with customer representatives and other company functional units to assure compliance to the customer's "Request for Quotation."
Perform make verses buy analyses and provide related recommendations to management.
Create and maintain records, data schedules and other pertinent information as required.
Cultivates and Supports Lean Activities, Cellular Standardization and Continuous Improvement practices throughout, using various tools and methods.
May assist in structuring departmental budgets.
Conducts producibility studies to evaluate production process reliability and provide appropriate recommendations.
Assist in justification of new capital equipment and developing future processes that may be required to meet departmental and company goals.
Prepares specification of production operations, prepares vendor instructions for operations sourced outside the company and defines tooling requirements and issuance of tool orders to Tool Fabrication department.
Interact with customer organizations including, tool and product configuration, manufacturing tolerances that affect producibility, cost and schedules.
Use blueprints and applicable specifications to assist quality with the determination of inspection requirements.
Completes other tasks as assigned by management.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in a related technical field, and 5+ years related experience or Associate's degree in a related technical field, and 10+ years related experience required.
Must be able to read complex blueprints, technical drawings, bills of material, assembly instructions utilized to build units, assemblies, and parts.
Ability to use measuring equipment - calipers, height gauges, micrometers etc.
Ability to work hands on within the production environment.
Familiar with Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing
Effective oral and written communication skills.
Ability to work effectively in a team/collaborative environment.
Experience with operating and maintaining CNC machinery, including routine maintenance and repairs
Strong knowledge of CAD/CAM software
Proficiency in G-code and Macro-B syntax and structure required.
Basic knowledge in SCL and JavaScript (or similar) for PLC and post processor development preferred but not required.
Proficiency with CAD software (SolidWorks preferred), ERP systems (Epicor preferred), general office applications (MS Office preferred) and CNC programming (PowerMill preferred)
Ability to work effectively with internal and external customers.
