Is CNC lathe set in high demand?

CNC lathe setters are in high demand due to the ongoing need for precision manufacturing in industries such as aerospace, automotive, and medical devices. Skilled operators with knowledge of CNC programming and machine maintenance are particularly sought after, and employment opportunities tend to be stable in manufacturing regions.

What is a CNC lathe set?

CNC Lathe Setters are skilled technicians who prepare and configure Computer Numerical Control (CNC) lathes for production runs. Their primary responsibilities include installing and adjusting tools, loading raw materials, setting machine parameters, and performing test runs to ensure parts meet specifications. They also troubleshoot issues, conduct routine maintenance, and work closely with machinists and quality control inspectors to maintain efficient and accurate manufacturing processes.

What are some common challenges faced by CNC lathe sets and how can they be addressed on the job?

CNC Lathe Setters often encounter challenges such as machine calibration errors, tool wear, and tight production deadlines. Addressing these issues typically involves regular maintenance checks, using precise measuring instruments, and collaborating closely with quality control teams to ensure parts meet specifications. Effective communication with supervisors and other machinists can also help quickly resolve technical problems and keep production running smoothly. Proactively staying updated on machine software and tooling advancements can further enhance efficiency and minimize downtime.

What is the difference between Cnc Lathe Set vs Cnc Machinist?

AspectCnc Lathe SetCnc Machinist
CredentialsTypically requires technical training or certification in CNC operationRequires CNC operator certification and sometimes additional machining or programming skills
Work EnvironmentManufacturing shops, machine shops, production facilitiesManufacturing plants, machine shops, aerospace, automotive industries
Job FocusSetting up and operating CNC lathes for specific tasksProgramming, setting up, operating, and troubleshooting CNC machines including lathes and mills

The main difference is that a Cnc Lathe Set specializes in preparing and operating CNC lathes, focusing on setup and execution of turning operations. A Cnc Machinist has a broader role, often involving programming, operating multiple types of CNC machines, and troubleshooting. Both roles require technical skills and certifications, but the Cnc Machinist typically has a wider scope of responsibilities.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CNC lathe set?

To thrive as a CNC Lathe Set, you need strong mechanical aptitude, understanding of machining principles, and experience with CNC programming, typically backed by technical training or certification. Familiarity with CNC lathe machines, G-code, precision measuring tools, and CAD/CAM software is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective communication help ensure quality output and smooth collaboration with team members. These skills are crucial for producing precise components, maintaining safety, and meeting production deadlines in a manufacturing environment.

CNC Lathe Set-Up Machinist (Programming a Plus)
Schedule: M-F full- or part-time; 7am start (some flexibility available up to 8am)
Role: Contract-to-perm for the right fit
Pay: $30-40/hour

Overview
We are seeking an experienced CNC Lathe Set-Up Machinist to join a fast-paced, high-production machine shop environment. This role is ideal for a hands-on machinist who can quickly step into a busy operation with minimal training and confidently handle machine set-ups, running production parts, part measurements, and troubleshooting. Strong CNC lathe set-up experience is essential; programming knowledge is preferred but not required.

The ideal candidate will be comfortable working in a quick-turn, short-run manufacturing environment and must be able to efficiently set up and run existing jobs while keeping production moving. Candidates with Mastercam programming experience are encouraged to apply, but our primary need is someone with strong set-up capabilities.

Responsibilities
  • Perform CNC lathe machine set-ups efficiently and accurately with minimal supervision
  • Set up and run production parts using existing programs
  • Read and work from existing CNC programs, making adjustments as needed
  • Program parts using Mastercam (preferred, but not required)
  • Work with Fanuc Controls in a production machining environment
  • Support short-run, quick-turn production with frequent changeovers
  • Machine primarily aluminum and stainless-steel components
  • Inspect and measure finished parts using calipers, micrometers, and other precision measuring tools
  • Troubleshoot machining and set-up issues to maintain workflow and production schedules
  • Maintain quality standards and ensure parts meet specifications
  • Work collaboratively in a fast-paced shop environment where adaptability and urgency are important
Qualifications
  • Strong CNC lathe set-up experience required
  • Experience with Fanuc Controls required
  • Ability to independently set up and run parts with minimal supervision
  • Programming experience preferred, particularly with Mastercam
  • Strong understanding of machining processes, tooling, and offsets
  • Experience machining aluminum and stainless-steel materials
  • Ability to accurately measure and inspect parts using precision measuring instruments
  • Comfortable working in a fast-paced, high-volume manufacturing environment
  • Reliable work history with demonstrated job stability preferred
  • Ability to work independently with little to no training
