How much do cnc laser programming jobs pay per hour?

As of Aug 14, 2026, the average hourly pay for cnc laser programming in California is $21.49, according to ZipRecruiter salary data. Most workers in this role earn between $18.51 and $23.03 per hour, depending on experience, location, and employer.

What are some common challenges CNC laser programmers face when transitioning from other CNC roles?

CNC Laser Programmers often encounter unique challenges when moving from general CNC machining or milling roles, such as adapting to the intricacies of laser technology, material behavior under laser cutting, and the importance of optimizing cutting paths for efficiency. Unlike traditional machining, laser programming requires a deeper understanding of heat effects, kerf width, and material-specific settings. Additionally, mastering specialized software for laser cutting and collaborating closely with design engineers to interpret complex CAD drawings are key aspects. Embracing continuous learning and open communication with operators and maintenance teams can help ease the transition.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a CNC laser programmer?

To thrive as a CNC Laser Programmer, you need a solid understanding of CNC machinery, technical drawing interpretation, and experience with manufacturing processes, often supported by relevant technical training or an associate degree. Proficiency in CAD/CAM software, G-code programming, and familiarity with laser cutting machines are essential technical requirements. Attention to detail, strong problem-solving skills, and effective communication make someone stand out in this position. These skills ensure precise, efficient production and minimize errors, which are critical for maintaining quality and meeting production deadlines.

What is the difference between Cnc Laser Programming vs Cnc Machinist?

AspectCnc Laser ProgrammingCnc Machinist
CredentialsTechnical training, certifications in laser systemsTechnical training, machining certifications
Work EnvironmentLaser cutting shops, manufacturing facilitiesMachine shops, manufacturing plants
Job FocusProgramming laser cutters for precise cutsOperating and setting up various CNC machines
Tools & SkillsCAD/CAM software, laser operationManual machining, CNC machine operation

While both roles involve CNC technology, Cnc Laser Programming specializes in creating programs for laser cutting machines, focusing on software and precision. Cnc Machinists operate a variety of CNC machines, including mills and lathes, with a broader focus on machine setup and manual adjustments. Understanding these differences helps job seekers find the right career path in manufacturing technology.

What is CNC laser programming?

CNC laser programming involves creating and optimizing computer instructions that control laser cutting machines. These programs tell the laser where to move, when to cut, and how fast to operate, ensuring precise and efficient material processing. CNC laser programmers typically use CAD and CAM software to design parts and generate the necessary machine code. This role is crucial in industries like manufacturing, automotive, and aerospace, where accuracy and repeatability are essential.

Job description

Diamond Foundry Inc. is solving the thermal limitation at the foundation of today's most exciting tech industries -- AI & cloud compute, electric-car power electronics, and 5G/6G wireless. We have managed to produce the world's first single-crystal diamond wafers and are now on a mission to put a diamond behind every chip. We are the rare unicorn that has grown fast and profitably. We received $515m in funding and are executing a multi-$B expansion plan for one of the greenest forms of tech manufacturing: converting greenhouse gas into diamond wafers using zero-emission energy.

We are looking for a versatile technician to join our Product Technology and Equipment team. In this role, you will be responsible for the operation and process development of a variety of CNC laser systems. You will work closely with a multi-functional team of process engineers to develop and maintain cutting-edge diamond manufacturing techniques. Previous experience with CNC machines, maintenance of industrial equipment, and/or laser-optical systems is preferred but not required.

This role will be scheduled M-F, 8 hours per day, and will work out of our Fremont, CA office.

Responsibilities
  • Set up and run laser CNC systems to cut high-priority customer and R&D samples for process development.

  • Work with process engineers to evaluate, standardize, and support new process development.

  • Assist with writing SOPs and training production technicians to release new processes to production.

  • Work with team members and independently to support and maintain good manufacturing processes and continuous improvements.

  • Communicate production status and issues in a timely manner to team members and management.

Requirements
  • Associate's degree in a technical field, military technical training, or 3+ years of work experience in a related technical field.

  • Ability to perform critical tasks with a high level of accuracy per procedure, with appropriate use of PPE as required to maintain a safe working environment.

  • No work restrictions: This position requires standing, kneeling, reaching, climbing ladders, and occasional lifting of up to 50 lbs.

  • Must be able and willing to work routine overtime and on nights and weekends to meet production goals.

  • Manufacturing or facilities experience is a plus.

Diamond Foundry believes in supporting our employees from the workplace to their personal and home life. We provide eligible employees with an opportunity to enroll in a variety of benefit programs, generally including health insurance, flexible spending accounts, retirement savings plans, life and disability insurance programs, and a number of programs that provide for both paid and unpaid time away from work. Perks include employee discounts to VRAI. Our benefits begin as early as your first day of employment. Medical and vision coverage are retroactive to your start date, while dental and voluntary benefits take effect once you’ve completed your enrollment.

Diamond Foundry Inc. is committed to operating in full compliance with all applicable state and federal laws. Our commitment extends to ensuring that our manufacturing and engineering departments adhere to the highest standards of legal and regulatory compliance. Additionally, these departments may have specific physical requirements to ensure the safety and efficiency of our operations. We prioritize the well-being of our employees and strive to create a work environment that promotes both legal compliance and the optimal functioning of our manufacturing and engineering processes.

Manufacturing and Engineering Departments Physical Requirements:
-Use appropriate PPE and follow all safety policies, practices, and procedures.
-This position will often: Sit, stand for long periods, walk, grasp, reach with hands and arms, lift below and above shoulders, bend, twist at the waist,  climb, balance, stoop, squat,  kneel, crawl, talk, hear, see, use fine finger manipulation, and complete repetitive motions.
-Some tasks may require the use of ladders or stairs
-Some tasks may require driving or the use of foot controls
-Lift/carry and push/pull up to 50 pound
