Cnc Grinding Machine Operator information

What is a CNC grinding machine operator?

CNC Grinding Machine Operators are skilled technicians who set up, operate, and maintain computer numerically controlled (CNC) grinding machines. They use these machines to shape, finish, or sharpen metal or other materials to precise specifications. Their responsibilities include reading blueprints, selecting proper grinding wheels, monitoring machine operation, and inspecting finished parts for quality. CNC Grinding Machine Operators play a critical role in manufacturing industries to ensure products meet exact tolerances and standards.

What skills and qualifications are needed to be a CNC grinding machine operator?

To thrive as a CNC Grinding Machine Operator, you need a solid understanding of machining principles, blueprint reading, and precision measurement, often supported by vocational training or relevant certifications. Familiarity with CNC programming languages, operation of grinding machines, and use of measuring tools like micrometers and calipers is essential. Strong attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and the ability to work independently are important soft skills in this role. These skills ensure the production of high-quality parts, minimize errors, and maintain safe, efficient manufacturing processes.

What are common challenges faced by CNC grinding machine operators and how can they be addressed?

CNC Grinding Machine Operators often encounter challenges such as maintaining tight tolerances, troubleshooting machine errors, and ensuring consistent quality across production runs. To address these, operators can regularly calibrate and maintain their equipment, stay informed on the latest software updates, and follow strict inspection protocols. Being proactive in communication with maintenance teams and collaborating closely with quality assurance helps minimize downtime and ensures products meet specifications.

Become a Key Player as a CNC Machine Operator

You will keep production moving by setting up, operating, and troubleshooting CNC mills, lathes, and mill-turn centers. Your work directly affects part quality, on-time delivery, and collaboration with engineering and production teams. This is an onsite role covering 2nd or 3rd shift (3:00 PM–11:30 PM or 11:00 PM–7:30 AM); please note preferred shift on your resume.

Here's How You'll Make an Impact on the Team
  • Edit, set up, operate, and perform preventive maintenance on CNC machines and production support equipment
  • Read manufacturing prints and machine drawings to ensure correct tooling, fixturing, offsets, and process parameters
  • Load and vet NC programs, adjust offset tables, and maintain/replace cutting tools
  • Program pre-setters and shrink-fit equipment; set tool life parameters and understand macro programming/subroutines
  • Measure and record in-process QA data, perform calibration checks, and electronically document production data
  • Operate material handling equipment (hoists, cranes, tow motors) and move material to enable production flow
  • Train and assist less-skilled machinists and operators; communicate with engineering to resolve program or process issues
  • Perform 1st-piece prove outs and ensure workholding alignment using indicators, micrometers, and calipers
  • Maintain 6S/housekeeping standards and use required PPE; be available for overtime as needed
Here's What You'll Need to Be Successful in This Role
  • High school diploma or GED
  • 2–4 years of experience working with CNC machines (mills, lathes, mill-turn)
  • Ability to read blueprints, prints, and process specifications
  • Practical experience with measuring tools (calipers, micrometers, depth gauges) and tool setting equipment
  • Working knowledge of CNC controls and software (Fanuc, Haas, Mazatrol, Fagor, Siemens referenced)
  • Understanding of work offsets, tool offset parameters, GD&T fundamentals, and CAD-CAM concepts
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills and ability to work independently or in teams
  • Ability to stand for extended periods and lift/push up to 50 pounds regularly
Here's What Else Might Help You Out
  • Experience training others and documenting processes
  • Familiarity with presetters, shrink-fit tooling, and advanced CNC programming techniques
Pay Range

$29.65 - $37.06/hour
