What is a CNC apprentice?

A CNC Apprentice is an entry-level role where individuals learn how to operate and program Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machines. Under the guidance of experienced machinists, apprentices gain hands-on experience in reading blueprints, setting up machines, and maintaining quality control. This position is ideal for those looking to develop technical skills in precision manufacturing while often completing formal training or coursework.

What are the typical daily responsibilities of a CNC apprentice?

As a CNC Apprentice, your daily responsibilities usually include assisting in machine setup, monitoring CNC machinery during runs, inspecting finished parts for quality, and performing basic maintenance tasks. You'll also learn to interpret technical drawings, measure components with precision instruments, and maintain a clean and organized workspace. Most apprentices work under the guidance of experienced machinists, supporting production while gradually taking on more complex tasks as their skills develop. This hands-on training is designed to prepare you for higher-level roles within the manufacturing environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the CNC apprentice position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CNC Apprentice, you need a basic understanding of machining principles, mechanical aptitude, and a high school diploma or equivalent. Familiarity with CNC machines, reading technical blueprints, and basic computer-aided manufacturing (CAM) software are typically important, and some employers may prefer candidates enrolled in or completing a manufacturing or machining certificate program. Strong attention to detail, eagerness to learn, and good teamwork and communication skills set successful apprentices apart. These skills and qualities are vital for producing accurate parts, working safely, and progressing efficiently within the CNC field.

How to become a CNC apprentice with no experience?

To become a CNC apprentice with no experience, you should focus on developing basic math and technical skills, and consider completing a high school diploma or equivalent. Many programs offer on-the-job training and may require passing a skills assessment or interview; some employers also look for interest in machining and familiarity with tools or safety procedures. Enrolling in a technical school or community college course related to manufacturing or machining can improve your chances of securing an apprenticeship.

Established in 1961, Babbitting Service, Inc. (BSI) is a leader in the manufacture, design, and repair of Hydrodynamic Fluid Film Bearings (Babbitt-Lined Bearings) and related components. BSI serves OEMs, aftermarket customers, and end users across the globe.

BSI is looking for skilled CNC Lathe Machinists who can work independently in our high-mix, low-volume job-shop environment.

This is not an apprentice-level or production-operator position. We need skilled machinists who can independently set up and run CNC lathes, write and edit CNC programs at the machine control, manage tooling, workholding, and offsets, inspect their own work, and recognize and correct machining problems.

We are looking for experienced CNC machinists. Demonstrated machining ability, judgment, and problem-solving skills matter more to us than a specific number of years in the trade.

CNC Lathe Machinist Job Responsibilities:

  • Set up and run Doosan and DN Solutions CNC lathes with Fanuc controls.
  • Write, edit, and adjust CNC programs at the machine control as needed.
  • Set work offsets and adjust tool and wear offsets as needed to maintain part dimensions and tolerances.
  • Install tooling and set up workholding, including cutting jaws as needed.
  • Verify first-run parts meet drawing requirements.
  • Inspect cutting tools and inserts and replace or adjust them as needed.
  • Produce parts within required tolerances and specifications, commonly around .001" and occasionally as close as .0005".
  • Measure parts for conformance to specifications using micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, gauge pins, bore gauges, and other appropriate measuring tools.
  • Adjust machine speeds and feeds as needed for the work being performed.
  • Upload and download CNC programs to and from the program server.
  • Make program changes as needed for drawing revisions or job requirements.
  • Identify problems and make appropriate corrections as needed.
  • Keep the work area safe, clean, and organized.

Requirements:

  • Previous CNC lathe machining and setup experience sufficient to perform the position independently.
  • Ability to read and interpret part drawings, dimensions, tolerances, and surface-finish requirements.
  • Proficiency with precision measuring instruments, including micrometers, calipers, dial indicators, gauge pins, bore gauges, and other appropriate measuring tools.
  • Working knowledge of practical machining math.

Preferred Experience

  • Doosan and DN Solutions CNC lathes with Fanuc controls.
  • High-mix, low-volume or job-shop machining.
