Job description

A Railroad Track Foreman supervises maintenance-of-way (MOW) crews in the construction, repair, and inspection of railway tracks and infrastructure. They enforce safety regulations, assign daily tasks, and maintain accurate production and administrative records. 
 
Core Responsibilities
  • Crew Supervision: Directs day-to-day work assignments for track crews, conducts mandatory daily safety briefings, and trains new workers.
  • Safety & Compliance: Ensures all work strictly complies with Federal Railroad Administration (FRA) regulations, OSHA guidelines, and railway operating rules.
  • Track Inspection: Conducts routine inspections on assigned territories to identify track defects (e.g., in rails, ties, ballast, or drainage) and coordinates necessary repairs.
  • Resource Management: Manages equipment, heavy machinery, and materials, coordinating with project managers and other departments to minimize disruption to train schedules.
  • Administrative Reporting: Documents daily tasks, tracks employee timesheets, compiles production logs, and updates project files. 
 
 
Requirements & Qualifications
  • Experience: Typically requires a minimum of 2–4 years of progressive experience in railway track maintenance, construction, or a related role.
  • Certifications: Many positions require or prefer valid Track Inspection Guidelines certification and specialized heavy machinery/hi-rail vehicle licenses.
  • Knowledge: Expert understanding of track engineering, occupational hazards, and engineering plans.
  • Physical & Environmental Demands: Must be capable of walking several miles daily on uneven surfaces, lifting up to 50 pounds, and working outdoors in extreme weather conditions.
