Job Summary
Intermodal Heavy Duty Mechanics perform major and minorrepairs, overhauls and servicing on all types of vehicles, vehicle attachmentsand material handling equipment. This position requires you to work nightshifts and partial weekends, as required.
Working Conditions
- Ability to work irregular shifts, includingevenings, midnights, weekends, holidays, and occasional overtime.
- Frequent bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, performingoverhead work, lifting/carrying up to 50 pounds (22 kg).
- Shop environment, ability to work inside shopand outside shop in all weather conditions.
- Must be able to work at heights up to 60 feet.
- Comply with safe work procedures and policies.
Major Responsibilities
- Inspect, service and maintain Intermodal cranes, terminal tractors, vehicles and equipment, in accordance with federal and company regulations, including changing oil or repairing, replacing, cleaning and adjusting parts.
- Diagnose diesel / gas engine, electrical, hydraulic, driveline malfunctions and making required repairs. Use electric and oxy-acetylene welding equipment, lubrication equipment and other vehicle repair tools and equipment, and operate said tools and machinery in a safe and effective manner.
- Use measuring devices and understanding visual displays.
- Repair various yard equipment machinery.
- Prepare inspection, maintenance, and work reports, and record details on prescribed forms in accordance with established procedures.
Requirements
- High School diploma or equivalent General Education Diploma (GED).
- Diploma of Vocational Studies in Heavy Duty Mechanic.
- Diesel mechanic, Automotive, Truck & Coach, Hydraulics experience.
- Valid driver's license.
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Technical knowledge of diesel mechanics. Qualified 310T/421A mechanics.
- Possess your own tools sufficient to perform repairs and service on small equipment. Tools specific to the railway are supplied by the company.
- Must meet all medical fitness for duty requirements for the position, including requirements for Safety
Assets
- Experience troubleshooting hydraulic and electronic systems.
- Commercial Transport or preferably Heavy Duty Working experience.
- Welding skills.
- Relevant work experience in similar working conditions or regulatory/safety environment.
- Post-secondary education.
- Basic computer skills.

This position is a unionized position, as such pay and benefits are governed by the applicable Collective Agreement.
Paid Training:
Successful candidates will receive paidon-the-job training on new products and updates as required by the company,both theoretical and practical instructions.
Depending on your level of experience, candidates must have completed 2nd yearand registered with trade branch for 3rd year and will attend a series ofcourses at your work location in Canada or away from your work area fortraining purposes. Training will include intermodal equipment components,control systems, air brakes, start up, basic diesel electric systems and CNmaintenance regulations. Truck motors, data recorders, as well as fuel, oil,water and air systems will also be covered. Successful completion of thisprogram is essential for performance of future duties.
