What is a CMP Semiconductor?

A CMP (Chemical Mechanical Polishing) Semiconductor job involves working with the CMP process, which is used to planarize and smooth semiconductor wafers during chip manufacturing. Professionals in this role operate and maintain CMP equipment, monitor process parameters, and ensure wafer quality. They may also troubleshoot issues, optimize processes, and collaborate with engineers to improve efficiency. This job is critical in semiconductor fabrication to create flat, defect-free surfaces for subsequent layering and circuitry formation.

What are the common daily responsibilities for someone working in a CMP Semiconductor role?

In a CMP Semiconductor position, your daily tasks typically include operating and monitoring chemical mechanical planarization tools, performing routine equipment maintenance, analyzing process data to optimize wafer quality, and troubleshooting any process anomalies. You will also collaborate closely with process engineers, quality assurance teams, and equipment maintenance staff to ensure smooth production workflows. Regular documentation and reporting of process results are important for maintaining compliance and driving continuous improvement. This role requires a proactive approach to both problem-solving and process optimization, creating a dynamic and collaborative work environment.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in the CMP Semiconductor position, and why are they important?

To thrive as a CMP (Chemical Mechanical Planarization) Engineer or Technician in the semiconductor industry, you should possess a strong background in materials science, chemical engineering, or a related discipline, often supported by a bachelor's degree or relevant technical certification. Familiarity with CMP equipment, process controls, and data analysis tools such as SPC (Statistical Process Control) systems is essential. Attention to detail, problem-solving skills, and effective teamwork are crucial soft skills in this role. These abilities ensure the precise processing of semiconductor wafers, optimal yield, and reliable collaboration within manufacturing teams.

Job Description

Join Intel - and build a better tomorrow. Intel is in the midst of an exciting transformation, with a vision to create and extend computing technology to connect and enrich the lives of every person on Earth. Join us and help us create the next generation of technologies that will shape the future for decades to come.

Engineers within Intel's Logic Technology Development (LTD) organization are chartered with continuing to meet the challenge of Moore's Law in the 21st century. We innovate leading edge fabrication processes and continue to overcome seemingly impossible barriers as tolerances and specifications for building best-in-class computing devices become increasingly rigorous.

The role of a Chemical Mechanical Planarization (CMP) Process Development Engineer in LTD encompasses developing and sustaining planarization techniques for a variety of materials and architectures, enabling rapid miniaturization in the semiconductor industry and the mass production of integrated circuits. CMP techniques leverage physics, chemistry, materials science and surface science concepts, and exist at the intersection of these disciplines. As a result, our team has a diverse set of scientific backgrounds that relies on strong collaboration and shared learning.

The role's responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Drive technology development and enablement for both high volume manufacturing and future technology, provides process integration and equipment solutions, and perform feasibility studies to meet desired device specifications

  • Lead design and development of technically sophisticated manufacturing processes and/or repair reverse engineering including material selection, parameter optimization, equipment metrology, and system design to enable new product designs and functional requirements

  • Perform pathfinding activities in support of process and hardware development enabling manufacturing of innovative device architectures, and develop roadmaps for technologies enabling future roadmap

  • Recommend and implement modifications for operating equipment to improve production efficiency, manufacturing techniques, and optimizing production output for existing products

  • Partner with key equipment and materials suppliers to develop and implement enabling elements of the technology

  • Perform process technology feasibility studies through theoretical simulations and/or practical engineering methods

  • Remain updated on relevant industrial process and material manufacturing technical trends and develop view of inherent future Intel process technology needs to push industry forward by partnering with vendor ecosystem to build cost sensitive roadmap

This role will require an on-site presence. Job posting details (such as work model, location or time type) are subject to change.
