Job Overview
The Lead CMDB Specialist plays a critical role in designing, implementing, and maintaining the Configuration Management Database (CMDB) to ensure data accuracy, governance, and alignment with business and IT strategies. This role provides technical leadership for ServiceNow platform operations, drives architectural standards and best practices, and collaborates across IT and business teams to support IT Service Management processes such as Incident, Change, and Asset Management. The Lead CMDB Specialist ensures integration with discovery tools, ITOM/ITAM processes, and other enterprise systems while monitoring CMDB health and guiding continuous improvement initiatives.
Responsibilities
  • Strategy & Governance: Develop and lead the overall CMDB strategy, architecture, and governance framework.
  • Strategy & Governance: Establish policies and standards for CI data management and ensure alignment with ITIL best practices and enterprise objectives.
  • Strategy & Governance: Participate in CMDB-related roadmap planning, platform upgrades, and future-state solution design.
  • Strategy & Governance: Establish and host the Configuration Control Board (CCB) to provide governance and alignment for new requirements and enhancements to the CMDB.
  • Data Modeling & Management: Design and maintain the CMDB data model, including CI classes, attributes, relationships, and classifications aligned with CSDM.
  • Data Modeling & Management: Implement processes for CI data creation, updates, audits, deduplication, normalization, and enrichment.
  • Data Modeling & Management: Monitor CMDB data health and proactively identify and resolve gaps or inconsistencies.
  • Data Modeling & Management: Ensure CI data supports ITSM processes (Incident, Change, Asset, Problem Management) and other ITOM applications.
  • Data Modeling & Management: Ensure lifecycle management is enforced to insure timely retirement of CIs as appropriate.
  • Integrations & Technical Leadership: Leverage OOB functionality such as Service Graph Connectors and ITOM Discovery for automated CI population.
  • Integrations & Technical Leadership: Oversee Service Mapping and Discovery implementations to ensure effective CMDB population and ongoing maintenance.
  • Integrations & Technical Leadership: Evaluate enhancement requests and provide technical design recommendations.
  • Integrations & Technical Leadership: Provide hands-on expertise to assist stakeholders with CMDB Reporting Requirements of varying complexity.
  • Integrations & Technical Leadership: Deploy and maintain MID Servers as appropriate to support On-Prem and Cloud-based Discovery Activities.
  • Collaboration & Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with architecture, infrastructure, application, ITAM, ITOM, and service management teams to ensure CMDB alignment with business and operational needs.
  • Collaboration & Cross-Functional Collaboration: Serve as a technical SME for CMDB-related projects, participating in requirements gathering, feasibility analysis, and solution design.
  • Collaboration & Cross-Functional Collaboration: Communicate effectively with stakeholders and executives regarding CMDB strategy, progress, and data quality initiatives.
  • Collaboration & Cross-Functional Collaboration: Coordinate with and provide direction to offshore or international resources to maintain CMDB standards, data quality, and operational alignment.
  • Monitoring, Reporting & Process Improvement: Develop dashboards and reports to track CMDB health, data integrity, and process effectiveness.
  • Monitoring, Reporting & Process Improvement: Identify opportunities to improve CMDB processes, governance, and compliance with standards.
  • Monitoring, Reporting & Process Improvement: Participate in audits, governance reviews, and corrective action plans to maintain data quality.

Required Qualifications
  • B.S./B.A. in Computer Science, Information Technology, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience
  • 7 years of relevant CMDB/Configuration Management experience, including at least 5 years supporting enterprise-level platform installations
  • Hands-on experience with ServiceNow CMDB, ITOM, ITAM, and Discovery implementations
  • Experience with CSDM, ITSM processes, and enterprise data governance
  • Strong skills in database design, data modeling, integrations, middleware, and discovery tools
  • Demonstrated ability to lead technical teams, provide mentorship, and work collaboratively across IT and business functions
  • Excellent problem-solving, critical thinking, organizational, and communication skills

Preferred Qualifications
  • M.A./M.S. in Business Administration, IT, Project Management, or related field
  • Experience with ServiceNow CSDM 4.0 or higher
  • Knowledge of Service Mapping, automated testing framework, and scripting (JavaScript, Jelly, SQL)
  • Familiarity with cloud platforms (AWS, Azure), web/application servers, network devices, virtualization, and databases
  • Experience creating dashboards and reports using tools like Power BI or similar
  • ServiceNow Certified System Administrator
  • ITIL Certification V3 or higher
  • Portfolio, Program, or Project Management certification (PfMP, PMP, PMI-PBA, CBAP, ECBA)
