Dialysis Patient Care Tech - CMC - Estelle - Full-Time

The mission of Correctional Managed Care is to address the healthcare needs of underserved patient populations within the Texas Department of Criminal Justice (TDCJ) and the Texas Juvenile Justice Department (TJJD).

JOB SUMMARY :

Provides direct patient care in a dialysis setting and supports licensed staff in the delivery of patient care within UTMB Correctional Managed Care.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS :

  • Assists in the medical evaluation of the patient pre-dialysis, including assisting with recording of patients vital signs, weight, general condition and special problems.

  • Correctly sets-up and operates dialysis equipment. Reports equipment problems to the Unit Nurse Manager, Nursing Supervisor, Charge Nurse Chief Technician or Hemodialysis Staff Nurse.

  • Performs preventive maintenance and quality control.

  • Correctly documents and troubleshoots on the EMR.

  • Makes safety checks on equipment and initiates ad terminates the hemodialysis treatment.

  • Assists in obtaining all lab work and tests ordered by the Nephrologist; assists in preparing monthly lag tubes for patients.

  • Monitors patients during hemodialysis treatments, including the taking of patient vital signs, and informs licensed staff of any potential problems.

  • Responds quickly and efficiently to emergencies.

  • Cleans machines, chairs and room after each patient and cleans the dialysis jugs at the end of the shift.

  • Administers only lidocaine subcutaneously, heparin sodium and normal saline intravenously within the regulations of DSHS.

  • Participates in the education of the patient.

  • Provides basic care for and has knowledge of the use of the hemodialysis access.

  • Stocks unit as needed or directed.

  • Cares for and uses patient access sites as instructed.

  • Adheres to internal controls and reporting structure established for department.

  • Performs related duties as required.

EQUIPMENT :

Artificial kidney and dialysis delivery systems. Standard laboratory testing and sterilizing devices.

WORK ENVIRONMENT :

Located within the confines of a prison, jail or juvenile detention center. Security clearance is required; pre-employment drug testing is also required.

REQUIRED EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE :

  • Must have Certified Clinical Hemodialysis Technician (CCHT) certification or equivalent certification, or must attain certification within 18 months of employment.

  • Completion of CMC Dialysis Patient Care Technician on the job training program.

  • Maintain current CPR and CCHT credentials.

Salary is commensurate with years of relevant work experience.
