Senior Cloud Engineer
ACCOUNTABILITY STATEMENT:
The Senior Cloud Engineer will plan, design, configure and maintain VyStar's enterprise Azure cloud server and storage environments and will lead the management and further development of VyStar's private and public cloud infrastructure. The person in this role will work closely with the architecture team, development team, system engineering team and InfoSec team to design and implement cloud resources in an optimal manner. They will review the cloud environments to validate implemented technologies and improve performance and reliability by ensuring security practices are followed. The incumbent will also manage cost optimization and ensure correct structure and tagging are in place for cost awareness and departmental chargeback.
This role will serve as a technical subject matter expert by actively participating in configuration consultation, vendor evaluation, and problem resolution of multiple systems. The candidate should have a clear understanding of how to research, design, implement and troubleshoot information systems, cloud technologies and technology solutions in support of business needs. Under limited supervision, the candidate will be required to effectively manage and prioritize assigned tasks and projects, as well as design complex multi-system solutions to meet the needs of the business. They will be required to make recommendations in these areas with a high level of technical competency. Assigned hours will primarily be standard VyStar corporate business hours but may also include evenings, nights, and weekends to implement changes or for support purposes. This role also participates in an on-call support rotation.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:
  • Responsible for day-to-day Azure cloud infrastructure operational tasks such as monitoring metrics and logs, responding to alerts, and system troubleshooting. Design, develop, and deploy modular cloud-based systems.
  • Manage and maintain cloud infrastructure resources, including compute instances, storage, network configurations, and security. Participate in troubleshooting issues in the environment and takes part in the on-call rotation with other cloud engineers.
  • Develop and maintain cloud solutions in accordance with best practices. Foster a DevOps mindset among the various engineering teams utilizing BICEP, ARM, Terraform and YAML templates.
  • Use of automation such as Infrastructure as Code to create infrastructure and CI/CD pipelines to apply changes. Participate in production deployments with other cloud and software engineers.
  • Develop scripts and other automation to streamline cloud and on-premises operations.
  • Maintain documentation of infrastructures design, related technical procedures, operations manuals, and other guidance.

JOB QUALIFICATIONS
Education
  • This position requires a 4-year degree in Information Systems, Computer Engineering or a related academic area and a minimum of 5 years' experience as a systems engineer or in a related position. Additional years of related experience in the field may be substituted for the formal education.

Experience
  • 5 - 7 years of Enterprise level work experience in Systems Engineering or in a related position with physical and virtual Microsoft-based systems; ideally in a financial services organization (or related industry).
  • 3+ years of experience managing a production Azure cloud environment
  • Experience with establishing technology guidelines based on best practices in enterprise level systems engineering.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead project initiatives from beginning to end.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills are required.
  • Understanding of IT, software development, and DevOps best practices
  • Expert knowledge of multiple Windows Server versions (2016/2019/2022/2025).
  • Knowledge and experience in Microsoft Azure. Google Cloud or AWS (Amazon Cloud Services) a plus.
  • Experience with automation technologies and the ability to streamline processes
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform.
  • Experience with containerization technologies such as Docker and container orchestration platforms like Azure Kubernetes Services (AKS) a plus.
  • Experience with bash, Python, PowerShell, or equivalent scripting language.
  • Experience with version control tools such as Git a plus.
  • Familiarity with Continuous Integration/Continuous Deployment tools such as Azure DevOps
  • Advanced troubleshooting abilities across multiple technologies and vendors. Able to calmly provide support on bridge lines during outages.
  • Solid understanding of networking concepts and protocols, including TCP/IP, DNS, load balancing, and VPN.
  • Knowledge of security best practices, compliance standards (e.g., GDPR, HIPAA), and data protection mechanisms in the cloud.
  • A solid understanding of the financial services industry and the laws and regulations that govern and/or impact the credit union is a plus.
  • A high level of interpersonal skills and social sensitivity are required. The candidate encounters employees on all levels of the organization. The candidate is a resource to the organization and must be an effective listener and communicator. The candidate must set the example in attitude, behavior, and work ethic within multiple teams.
