While Cloud Native Computing focuses on building and managing applications optimized for cloud environments, Cloud Infrastructure Engineers concentrate on creating and maintaining the underlying cloud infrastructure. Both roles often collaborate but serve different aspects of cloud technology deployment.

What is cloud native computing?

Cloud native computing is an approach to designing, building, and running applications that fully exploit the advantages of cloud computing. It typically involves using technologies like containers, microservices, and dynamic orchestration platforms such as Kubernetes to create scalable, resilient, and easily manageable applications. Cloud native applications are designed to run in modern, distributed environments, enabling faster development, deployment, and iteration. This approach helps organizations deliver new features and updates more efficiently while maintaining high availability and performance.

What are some common challenges faced by professionals working in Cloud Native Computing, and how can they be addressed?

Professionals in Cloud Native Computing often encounter challenges such as managing complex containerized environments, ensuring security across microservices, and keeping up with rapidly evolving technologies. Addressing these requires strong collaboration with DevOps, security, and development teams, as well as continuous learning to stay current with new tools and best practices. Many organizations also invest in automation and robust monitoring solutions to streamline operations and reduce manual workload, which helps teams efficiently manage their cloud native infrastructure.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive in Cloud Native Computing, and why are they important?

To thrive in Cloud Native Computing, you need strong skills in containerization, orchestration, DevOps practices, and a solid understanding of cloud platforms, often supported by a degree in computer science or related experience. Familiarity with tools such as Kubernetes, Docker, CI/CD pipelines, and cloud services like AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud, along with certifications like CKA or AWS Certified Solutions Architect, is highly valuable. Problem-solving, collaboration, and adaptability are important soft skills for efficiently navigating fast-changing environments and working with cross-functional teams. These capabilities are essential for building scalable, resilient applications and ensuring continuous delivery in dynamic cloud ecosystems.

Job Description:

L3Harris seeks a Senior Cloud Software Architect who can bridge deep Cloud infrastructure expertise with modern software development practices for Cloud native software applications. The successful candidate has demonstrated experience developing applications for Multi-Cloud and Hybrid-Cloud environments, automating deployment of infrastructure and configuration, and architecting solutions leveraging Microservices and Event Driven patterns and will apply the experiences to support existing programs, support growth of business through new program pursuits and serve as a technology evangelist and thought leader. The candidate will shape the next generation of multiCloud, Microservicesbased platforms, mentor the nation's top engineers, and directly influence multimillion dollar contract wins.

Responsibilities:

  • Design and oversee development of applications deployed to Cloud/Hybrid, providing up to sixnine (99.9999%) availability. Requires understanding of Cloud services for compute (EC2, Lambda), storage (S3, EBS), and databases (RDS, Dynamo DB).
  • Architect solutions with Microservices and Event Driven patterns. Requires experience selecting COTS tools and Cloud Services, scaling Event Driven solutions and understanding how to deliver highly available solutions across zones, regions and Cloud providers.
  • Provide thought leadership when partnering with Business Development on successful contract pursuits and managing key partnerships with vendors. Requires ability to translate requirements and/or desired outcomes into solutions and document the design in technical volumes.
  • Demonstrate benefits of L3Harris solutions through Proof of Concepts (PoC) in resolving customer pain points and partner with the customers to provide technical leadership. Requires ability to integrate COTS products with internally developed software to deliver the desired outcomes to customers.

The role is both a technical lead and a trusted advisor where you will mentor engineers, drive architectural designs and solutions, and act as the goto subject matter expert (SME) for Cloud, Infrastructure as Code (IaC), Configuration-as-Code (CaC), DevSecOps, and Microservices/Event-Driven architecture across multiple programs.

Essential Functions:

  • Architect EndtoEnd Cloud solutions - Define reference architectures, deployment topologies, and dataflow patterns for mission critical workloads delivering up to sixnine (99.9999%) availability. Create and maintain multiCloud reference architectures, including network topology, data management, observability, and disaster recovery designs.
  • Design Microservices-based solutions - use containers (Docker, OCI) orchestration (Kubernetes, Red Hat OpenShift, Amazon EKS, Azure AKS, GKE), service mesh (Istio/Linkerd), and distributed messaging (Kafka, Pulsar, Pub/Sub) to meet scalability & resiliency goals. Define service boundaries, API contracts (REST/GraphQL, gRPC), Event Driven patterns, and schema registry strategies for data intensive applications.
  • Partner with customers - Translate mission level requirements into technical specifications, implement Proof of Concepts (PoC), support systemintegration testing, and oversee deployment of solutions to both customer and L3Harris managed Cloud Landing Zones.
  • Partner with Business Development - Author white papers, produce technical content for business capture initiatives, perform trade studies, and influence product roadmaps through emerging technology (e.g., serverless, edge compute, AI enhanced networking). Build & maintain strategic relationships with Cloud vendors and key partners to influence product direction and negotiate commercial and technical outcomes (pricing, service commitments, new platform capabilities) in a timely manner in support of critical initiatives.
  • Mentor & Evangelize - mentor & enable development teams, run architecture review sessions, provide hands-on workshops, champion best practice coding standards, and help develop Cloud expertise within the organization. Stay abreast of emerging Cloud services (e.g., serverless, AI/ML, edge computing) and evaluate fit for L3Harris mission needs.
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a US Security Clearance.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree and a minimum of 12 years of prior relevant experience. Graduate Degree and a minimum of 10 years of prior related experience. In lieu of a degree, minimum of 16 years of prior related experience.
