What is a cloud integration engineer?

Cloud Integration Engineers are IT professionals who specialize in connecting and coordinating cloud-based systems with on-premises or other cloud services. Their main role is to ensure seamless data flow, interoperability, and communication between different software applications, platforms, and databases. They design, implement, and maintain integration solutions, often using APIs, middleware, and various cloud tools. These engineers also troubleshoot integration issues and work to optimize performance and security across connected systems.

What are some common challenges cloud integration engineers face when integrating legacy systems with cloud platforms?

Cloud Integration Engineers often encounter challenges when connecting legacy systems to modern cloud environments, such as compatibility issues, data migration complexities, and ensuring secure data transfer. These systems may lack modern APIs, requiring custom connectors or middleware solutions. Additionally, engineers must carefully plan to minimize downtime and data loss, coordinate cross-functional teams, and ensure compliance with company and industry regulations. Successfully addressing these challenges requires strong problem-solving skills and close collaboration with IT, security, and business stakeholders.

What are the key skills and qualifications needed to thrive as a cloud integration engineer, and why are they important?

To thrive as a Cloud Integration Engineer, you need a strong background in computer science, experience with cloud platforms (such as AWS, Azure, or Google Cloud), and expertise in APIs and integration frameworks. Familiarity with tools like Kubernetes, Docker, Terraform, and certifications like AWS Certified Solutions Architect are highly valued. Strong problem-solving skills, effective communication, and the ability to work collaboratively with diverse teams make you stand out in this position. These skills are crucial for designing, implementing, and maintaining seamless, secure integrations that drive business agility and innovation in cloud environments.

What is the difference between Cloud Integration Engineer vs Cloud Solutions Architect?

AspectCloud Integration EngineerCloud Solutions Architect
Primary FocusImplementing and managing cloud integrations and workflowsDesigning overall cloud solutions and architecture
Skills & CertificationsCloud certifications (AWS, Azure), scripting, API managementCloud architecture, design, and strategic planning certifications
Work EnvironmentHands-on technical roles, working with APIs, middlewareHigh-level design, client interaction, solution planning
Industry UsageIT, cloud service providers, enterprise integrationsCloud consulting firms, large enterprises, SaaS providers

While both roles work within cloud environments, the Cloud Integration Engineer focuses on implementing and maintaining cloud integrations, whereas the Cloud Solutions Architect designs comprehensive cloud solutions and strategies. The roles often collaborate but differ in scope and responsibilities.

Is coding required to be a Cloud Integration Engineer?

Yes, coding is often required for a Cloud Integration Engineer, as they typically develop, customize, and troubleshoot integration solutions using programming languages like Python, Java, or scripting tools. Familiarity with APIs, cloud platforms, and automation tools is also important for effective integration work.

Job description

Job Description

The Role
As a Senior Systems Integration Engineer - Enterprise Transformation, you will design, build, and scale enterprise integrations and data pipelines that modernize how systems work together across GM. Working from the Software/Core IT side of the transformation, you will focus on connecting Google Workspace, SaaS platforms, enterprise AI tools, and GM's core business systems through secure, reusable, and scalable integration patterns. You will independently deliver complex integration solutions, translate business and technical requirements into practical system designs, and build production-ready pipelines that align to enterprise standards. You will partner closely with product, engineering, TPM, security, and business teams to enable reliable data flow, workflow continuity, and platform interoperability across GM.

What You'll Do
  • Establish reusable patterns by defining and building GCP-native integration templates, accelerators, and reference implementations that reduce redundant engineering efforts across transformation pods.

  • Apply platform guardrails by aligning integration architectures with enterprise data standards, identity guidelines, and security policies.

  • Partner with Security, Privacy, Identity, and Information Lifecycle Management (ILM) teams to secure workflows that process regulated or sensitive data.

  • Evaluate incoming integration requests and recommend the right technical path (standard SaaS configuration, GCP-native services, or custom engineering).

  • Design, build, and maintain robust APIs, webhooks, and middleware pipelines connecting GCP with Workday, ServiceNow, and core internal systems.

  • Define source-to-destination data mappings, transformation logic, exception handling, and monitoring models that support reliable operations.

  • Modernize legacy and Microsoft-dependent interfaces into scalable, event-driven, Google-aligned integration patterns.

  • Build end-to-end workflows that orchestrate data movement and trigger actions across HR, IT, and internal enterprise ecosystems.

  • Design coexistence approaches that allow Microsoft, GCP, and internal environments to interoperate effectively during phased migration waves.

  • Coordinate data cutover sequencing, permissions validation, metadata mapping, and post-deployment stabilization to reduce business disruption.

  • Partner with Product Leads and Technical Program Managers to embed GCP-native integration capabilities into real-world operational processes.

  • Provide technical leadership through design reviews, architecture guidance, and engineering best practices across the program.

  • Deliver technical designs, dependency maps, runbooks, and handover materials that support long-term sustainment of integrated solutions.

Your Skills & Abilities (Required Qualifications)
  • 10+ years of experience in integration engineering, platform architecture, enterprise application integration, or software engineering within complex corporate environments.

  • Hands-on experience architecting and building enterprise pipelines using Google Cloud integration products (e.g., Apigee API Management, Google Cloud Application Integration, Pub/Sub, Cloud Functions).

  • Proven track record of mapping dependencies across SaaS applications, data layers, identity services, and business processes in large enterprise environments.

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related technical field, or equivalent practical experience.

  • Deep technical knowledge of integrating GCP with platforms such as Workday and ServiceNow using REST/SOAP APIs, web services, and integration hubs.

  • Strong production-level proficiency in Python and core scripting or automation frameworks.

  • Extensive experience working with REST APIs, webhooks, middleware solutions, and event-driven architecture patterns.

  • Strong understanding of Git-based version control, CI/CD pipelines, and debugging distributed integration issues across hybrid environments.

  • Deep knowledge of enterprise authentication, authorization, and identity frameworks (e.g., GCP IAM, OAuth2, SAML, OIDC).

  • Proven history of collaborating successfully with product managers, engineering teams, TPMs, security leads, and business stakeholders.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to explain technical trade-offs, architectural risks, and engineering decisions to non-technical partners.

What Can Give You a Competitive Advantage (Preferred Qualifications)
  • Active professional-level Google Cloud certification (e.g., Professional Cloud Architect or Professional Cloud Integration Engineer).

  • Direct experience supporting large-scale Microsoft 365 to Google Workspace migration or platform coexistence programs.

  • Technical familiarity with Google Workspace administration, Google Workspace APIs, Google Apps Script, and AppSheet.

  • Experience connecting enterprise workflows to modern data and AI ecosystems such as Gemini Enterprise, BigQuery, Dataflow, Glean, Slack, and Databricks.

  • Familiarity with corporate data retention, ILM, privacy frameworks, and regulated data controls in large-scale enterprise environments.

  • Experience supporting automated testing, complex cutover planning, data validation, hypercare support, and long-term sustainment models.

This job may be eligible for relocation benefits.
